Actress Marilu Henner (“Taxi”) chatted about starring in the Off-Broadway show “My First Ex-Husband.”
The play is being performed at the MMAC Theater in New York City. Tony nominee Randal Myler directed the Off-Broadway production from a script by comedy maven Joy Behar.
In “My First Ex-Husband,” Behar dives deep into the messy truths of love, marriage, and divorce, revealing the chaotic, funny, and often eye-opening realities of relationships. “The audience loves it, and everyone understands this kind of thing,” Henner said.
Henner on ‘My First Ex-Husband’
Henner’s run wraps on May 18th, and she is joined by Julia Sweeney, Benja Kay Thomas, and Marsha Mason.
“The show is so much fun,” Henner admitted. “There are eight monologues and four fabulous actors. I’ve had three husbands and lots of boyfriends, so I relate to all of the stories.”
“I think there is something for everyone in this show. Every single person who sees it will relate to it in some way,” she acknowledged.
Henner continued, “I have three theories about marriage and they are all experienced in this piece. First of all, marriage is like waffles; you throw the first one out. My second theory of marriage is that marriage is finding that special certain someone who you know you just want to aggravate for the rest of your life.”
“Finally, you will have a happy marriage when you realize that marriage isn’t two people gazing longingly into each other’s eyes, but rather looking out over the mountain in the same location. There needs to be vision and heat,” she elaborated.
Whoopi Goldberg in ‘My First Ex-Husband’
Yesterday, Whoopi Goldberg made a guest appearance in “My First Ex-Husband,” where she performed alongside Henner and all of the other ladies. “Whoopi is always great! I’ve known Whoopi for so many years. She was fantastic.”
‘The Journals of Adam and Eve’
Henner recalled doing “The Journals of Adam and Eve” with Hal Linden, which was performed at the Loreto Theater of The Sheen Center in New York City.
“I loved that show. It was so great. Hal just turned 94 years old. He was just fantastic, and really great,” she exclaimed.
Closing thoughts on ‘My First Ex-Husband’
For fans and viewers, she remarked, “I want people to get another marriage, maybe, or walk into their next marriage with their eyes wide open. Whatever you hear in the show, let it be a red flag warning to you.”
“Remember some of these things, and think of them as eight cautionary tales, or live through whatever experience you are going to have and then write your own version, and send it to Joy Behar,” Henner concluded.
