Rock artist Lucifena chatted about her new single “Tyrant” and working with rapper Lil Wayne.
She just signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment label, thus becoming the first female rock artist to do so. Her new music video for “Tyrant,” which features Lil Wayne, will be released on July 11th.
Lucifena on ‘Tyrant’ collaborative single
“My song ‘Tyrant’ is a declaration of war against injustice and to all of the tyrants in the world,” she said. “I originally wrote the song and had my producers Bassgawd and KingCold do the music.”
Working with Lil Wayne
On working with Lil Wayne, she said, “Collaborating with Lil Wayne was insane. I was so grateful he wanted to be a part of the song; he originally played this sick guitar solo on it and sent it to me one afternoon.”
“Then, I asked him if he ever wanted to lay a verse down he could do his own version of ‘Tyrant’ and when he said he was down, I was so excited,” she noted.
“I knew this was going to be something groundbreaking for rap and heavy music. Wayne is always the first to innovate,” she added.
Music and songwriting inspirations
On her music and songwriting inspirations, Lucifena shared, “What inspires my songwriting is usually what I see going on in the world, what goes on in my world, heartbreak, my own personal struggles and how I am feeling.”
“My music is my expression looking back and hearing songs I’ve written for the album it’s like so many different experiences and feelings in each song,” she added.
The digital age
On being an artist in the digital age, she remarked, “To be an artist in the digital age, I think has some advantages.”
“Throughout my time of doing music, I’ve been lucky to have some viral moments and hit some big numbers organically,” she admitted.
“That’s a blessing, and I enjoy being able to read the comments of people who connect and support,” she added.
Future plans
On her future plans, she shared, “My plans for the future include releasing a full length album.”
“I will be touring this summer with Lil Wayne and the rest of the Young Money crew. I really wanna push pop culture in a new direction with my music and will continue to push the boundaries,” she elaborated.
Advice for young and aspiring artists
For young and emerging artists, she said, “Play shows and a lot them. Really put yourselves out there; don’t expect overnight success.”
“Do music because you genuinely love it, not for outside validation. If you get that, it’s just a bonus,” she acknowledged.
“Also, it took me years to develop my sound, so just be patient and trust the process,” she added.
Success
Regarding her definition of the word success, she revealed, “The word success, to me, means fulfilling your purpose and living in your truth.”
Closing thoughts on ‘Tyrant’
For fans and listeners, she stated, “The new music is a mix of hardcore, shoegaze, post punk and metal sounds. What I would want people to take away is to just listen and feel something.”
