Adelphi University November 11th performance
She will be playing the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC) on November 11, a venue that was named “Best Concert Venue” in the 2017 “Best of Long Island.” “I am happy to go back there. We had a great time last time we were there. It’s a really venue with a really nice stage and great acoustics. I remember it well,” she said.
Arnaz continued, “I just try to put together a really good show. You take music that is classy and put a spin on it that allows people to appreciate it again for a fresh time. That’s something I like to do. I’ve been working with a wonderful musical director, Ron Abel, for a really long time, and he’s a master at doing that. It’s an evening of creating stories through music and lyrics. To me, it’s the story first, so of course it’s a journey. You want to tell a different story all night along. Inevitably, a lot of the music revolves around relationship and love, since 99 percent of the songs written are about that. Generally, the songs are on the up side. This show will be a trio show, but it was put together as a piano-only show. It worked so well.”
On the key to longevity in acting and entertainment, she said, “It’s a combination of a lot of factors. Song selection is very important, especially for the classic artists that have done that consistently well. They really knew how to pick material.”
Digital transformation of recording industry
Regarding the impact of technology in the recording industry, she said, “For the most part, a lot of the newer performers that are coming along, I don’t even understand why there are live performances. There is not much difference between the mechanics and the technology that are utilized to create a manufactured sound. They do the same thing when it’s live. You can just auto-tune yourself right out of the business. I think it’s terrible, really. I don’t appreciate the sound, and I don’t appreciate the talent cause there is no talent. There are all events, and spectacles with pyrotechnics, and I get it. I tried to watch the Video Music Awards, and I think I’m on another planet. I know they are not singing, but the main question is ‘can they actually sing?'”
Arnaz revealed that she loves CDs and hard copies of albums. “I still buy CDs. I love to touch them and to read the liner notes. I also download tons of songs on the Internet. It’s great for research. I love it,” she said. “Vinyl has a very interesting sound that has not be recreated by CDs. CDs are very digitally clean, but vinyl has a specific sound and it’s a groove. There is something wonderful about it. A lot of people are appreciating all the scratchiness and a little bit reality in there,” she said.
Plans for the future
On her future plans, Arnaz said, “I still travel all around the country to do my shows, but I’m processing a lot of the information that I have collected over the years and trying to put it together, so that eventually, I can start to write something about all of it. That’s in the distant future. As you may have read, there is a movie coming out that Amazon studios is producing, and it’s about my mother and my father and their relationship, and Cate Blanchett is starring in it, Aaron Sorkin is writing it, and I’m the technical advisor on that. Hopefully, we will begin putting the script together real soon. It will be quite a project.”
Advice for aspiring actors and singers
For hopefuls who wish to make it in the acting and entertainment scene, Arnaz said, “Be your own person. Don’t try to be a karaoke version of somebody else. Only the originals are the ones that really make it. Stick with who you are, be the best ‘you’ that you could be, and find your voice!”
Arnaz defined the word success as “Waking up in the morning and being happy with myself, and then my family being happy and healthy. The rest of it is all Fantasyland.”
