Rising young actress Liliana Inouye chatted about starring as Brandi Colwin in the Apple TV+ series “Amber Brown.”
What was it like to star in “Amber Brown”?
It was incredible. The most amazing part was the people. The entire cast and crew and of course director/showrunner Bonnie were the warmest, kindest people to work with. But more than that — they were fun! It was so cool to see the adults on set being silly and goofy but also totally professional.
And of course, working with Carsyn was the most fun ever! We have such a strong connection that it never feels like “work”.
What did you love most about your character Brandi… with an i?
Brandi is such a fun character to play. She’s bubbly and quirky and independent and a little mischievous. What I admire most about Brandi is that she’s very comfortable with who she is and she has this way of always turning everything around into something positive. If someone tells her she’s “weird,” she’ll take it as a compliment.
What was it like working with Carsyn Rose and Darin Brooks?
Fun. Carsyn and I were inseparable, both on and off set. We were always giggling, dancing, and doing Tik Toks. We had our special signature handshake before every scene! I feel beyond lucky that I got to work with her.
Darin Brooks is hilarious! He has the most amazing comedic timing and it was so cool and inspiring seeing him improvise while filming. He had me cracking up so many times. And he’s such a nice guy.
How does it feel to be an actress in the digital age? (with streaming and technology being so prevalent)
I feel like I grew up in the digital age so I don’t really know any different. I think it’s really exciting to have so many options for entertainment at your fingertips.
What motivates you each day as an actress?
Seeing other amazing actors bring characters and stories to life, in a really truthful way motivates me hugely. I love watching my favorite actors on screen, whether it’s comedy or really dramatic emotional roles.
Which actors would you like to someday work with as your dream acting partners?
Zendaya and Awkwafina. Hmm, maybe I need a one-word name, haha.
What is your advice for young and aspiring actors?
Just be yourself because no one else can be you. And keep going and give your all to every audition. You never know when a casting director will say “yes” or when they’ll keep you in mind for something else down the line.
What would you like to tell our readers about “Amber Brown”? (what’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)
I hope people see that while changes in life can be hard, they don’t have to be terrible. You can navigate hard times and still have fun when you have people who care in your life, and who help you look at things in a different way.
I also hope my character Brandi inspires kids to feel good about what makes them different, and to be happy and proud of what makes them them, without trying to be someone they’re not. Because the right people will like you for who you are.
