Tony award-winning actress and singer Leslie Uggams spoke about her Lifetime Achievement Award win at the 2025 Theatre World Awards.
Uggams was bestowed the John Willis Award for Lifetime Achievement in a ceremony that took place at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square in New York City.
The Theatre World Awards are the oldest awards given for Outstanding Broadway and Off-Broadway breakthrough performances.
The Theatre World Awards are presented annually at the end of the theatre season to six actors and six actresses for their significant, reviewable, debut performances in a Broadway or Off-Broadway production.

“It feels very special to be honored at the Theatre World Awards,” Uggams said. “This is an important award for the theatre community, so to be receiving the Lifetime Achievement award is just a ‘wow’ feeling.”
“This is just fantastic. I am so happy,” she exclaimed.

From all her Broadway shows, Uggams listed her first one (“Hallelujah, Baby!”) as her personal favorite.
Proudest moments in the industry
Throughout her illustrious career in the entertainment industry, she feels privileged to have worked with some “really fantastic people.” “So, it has been really great,” she admitted.
Advice for young and emerging actors
For young and aspiring actors, she said, “You need to practice, and hope you get seen by someone. Also, do community theatre, and hope you get to be successful.”
Success
Regarding her definition of the word success, Uggams said, “Success means enjoying my work.”
