Veteran actor Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about his 2021 Daytime Emmy nomination for “A House Divided.”

He is nominated for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Daytime Fiction Program” for playing Cameran Sanders in Season 3 of the series, which is written by Dan Garcia and directed by Mike Mahall. “I have a lot of fun with Dan and Mike,” he said. “Mike is like me, we are full of energy and a million ideas. We are always hyped up and very creative. We have a quiet dialogue together and we allow for things to happen. It’s all fun,” he added.

On receiving an Emmy nomination, he said, “That was a nice thing. My character is a person that has an arc to him. I am really looking forward to Season 4, it is really deep for me and I am very involved and very emotional.”

He has great words about working with Brad James, who plays his on-screen son, Cameran Sanders Jr., and the rest of the cast. “Brad is terrific and we really like each other a lot. He is genuine and caring. We have nice chemistry together in scenes, and we naturally like and respect each other,” he said.

“We all like each other on this show, for real. We really do, we are lucky,” he added. “It’s pretty cool and everybody is doing a nice job.”

For young and aspiring actors, he said, “You have to really want it, and you need to deal with the truth of things. I’ve been in the industry for 55 years, which is almost a lifetime.”

He shared that to this day, he still has a close bond with the cast of Welcome Back, Kotter. “We did the show for 4.5 years, and we still have that close bond of family, and natural love,” he said.

On the title of the current chapter of his life, he said, “Keep it real.” “I am taking my granddaughter out a lot,” he said. “I am a hardcore New Yorker about being honest. Make every day something special for yourself.”

He defined the word success as “living and being able to have a stepping stone for some acknowledgment of your achievements. In my mind, there is no quitting.”
