Social influencer Kyle Prue chatted about the podcast series “In Media Res,” and being a part of the digital age.

How was your experience doing “In Media Res”?

I almost never mean it when I say “I had a blast,” but in this case I really truly did.

As someone who works primarily from his apartment, it was a wonderful culture shock to spend a week in the studio with so many incredible actors, creatives, and collaborators. The final product continues to floor me, episode by episode.

What did this podcast series teach you about yourself?

It taught me how much I rely on my eyes as an actor. When you have to distill your performance down to only your voice you realize that your usual toolkit won’t cut it. The process was worth it alone to be able to watch the other actors work and pick up a few of their tricks. I think the process made me a much more pliable performer.

How does it feel to be a part of the digital age? (now with streaming, technology and social media being so prevalent)

In a word, “bewildering.” It feels like TikTok became the dominant platform almost overnight and one of the first things it did was create a class of internet personalities, myself included.

Nothing that’s happened since then has felt normal or precedented. But in the era of shortening attention spans I find myself more and more impressed by artists like those at the Good Story Guild who have found a way to merge genres to bring stories we recognize to artforms that we don’t.

What inspires you each day as an author and content creator?

I’m inspired primarily by the core belief that people are complicated and life is very complicated. I don’t find myself interested in stories that lay out clear messages and morals, but instead respect the fact that life is filled with nuance, oddities, and weirdness.

That’s one thing that really drew me to “In Media Res.” While reading a lot of the scenes I couldn’t tell what I was supposed to be feeling and I found that really exciting.

What do your plans for the future include?

I’m NDA’d so I’m just gonna say “lots.”

Were there any moments in your career that have helped define you?

I think if I had to shout out one thing in particular it’s probably my poetry degree. Yes, really. Poetry is the most intentional artform. No accidents. It matters why you choose one word over a different one, and where you decide to put it.

Through every art form that’s followed I’ve remembered to be intentional

What does the word success mean to you, Kyle?

Success to me is about feeling independent, yet empowered. You’re able to be authentically “you” while at the same time surrounded by people who help you to reach for more. This applies to all things, relationships, family, career, art, etc.

What’s the one thing you want our readers to get out of “In Media Res”?

I’d like people to think a little more deeply about the messaging they’re bombarded with in the information era. If you get inundated with the same message over and over again that most likely means that someone wants you to believe something specific.

If you live in Los Angeles or work in entertainment you probably already know that most of our culture is a disguised form of PR or advertising.

That might bother you, it might not, but either way I hope this show helps people see through the veil a little bit.
