Kris Allen talks new CD, Bowie tribute, fans and American Idol (Includes interview)

On performing at Gramercy Theatre in New York, Allen said, “I’ve never been here before. This is a very cool spot. We will play songs from the new album. I am really proud of this record, and we play a lot of new tunes, which is awesome. It’s a fun show and it takes you through a roller coaster, and everything ramps up to the end. People are just having a great time.”

During the American Idol finale, he performed a tribute for the late David Bowie, along with fellow winners Nick Fradiani, David Cook, Phillip Phillips and Lee DeWyze. “I thought it was so much fun,” he said. “I was really impressed by how they put that together. It was a lot of fun.”

When asked what he would miss most from the Idol experience, he revealed the “realness.” “I’ll miss the realness,” he said.

The song selection for his new album was a difficult process. “I wrote a lot of songs and I got a lot of outside help on this record than I’ve ever gotten. I went through different people and I asked for their opinions. There were two songs on the album that I finished the day before I recorded them,” Allen said.

When asked about his personal favorite song on the new album, the Arkansas native selected the upbeat “Faster Shoes.”

A loving husband to Katy, Allen is a proud father to Oliver, and they are expecting their second baby in June, and he noted that they do not know the sex of the baby yet.

Looking back in a rear-view mirror over the past seven years, he said, “I see a kid that was excited to be doing what he wanted to do, but still had a lot to learn.”

“I have the best fans. They are so supportive no matter what I do,” he concluded.
