Alternative rock artist Keyawna Nikole chatted about her new single “Bleed,” and collaborating with rapper Lil Wayne.
How did “Bleed” come about?
Bleed is actually the second song I made with Rob Cavallo and Cody Benjamin during our first time meeting ever!
It’s insane because he is such an icon in the production of the rock genre, that to not only make one song but two and have them tracked within an hour just off of natural instinct and vibe is unheard of!
“Bleed” is my deepest darkest thoughts pouring out for everyone to hear and see, I actually free-styled the entire song and had it tracked within 20 minutes, it was the real raw emotion I was feeling and still continue to feel.
I’m so grateful that session turned into a full studio album produced by Cavallo and Benjamin and a bond that’s stronger than just a team, a true feeling of family.
What was it like collaborating with Lil Wayne?
Wayne is one of the most genuine human beings I have the pleasure of knowing. Not only is he a musical genius but he makes a collaboration more than just a song. At least in my experience, it became genuine friendship.
Collaborating with Wayne is an empowering feeling, it’s the feeling of tears of joy running down your face because you got a text that says “I’m your biggest fan” after listening to a draft you sent, it truly has helped me embody a level of confidence I never felt before.
He has always been a voice of genre-blending in the alternative rock world and nu-metal space for years and I’m nothing but grateful and honored to have him believe in me.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
My music is truly a testament to my feelings. Every song is a personal journal, a deep dive into my real life. I’m extremely vulnerable when recording because it’s the only time I feel like I can express myself.
How does it feel to be an artist in the digital age? (Now with streaming, technology and social media being so prevalent)
The digital age is such a crazy thing because it’s so beneficial for independent artists like me. I’m so grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given with this record and as an independent artist the internet has been my greatest tool.
We gained over seven million views on just a behind the scenes clip of Wayne and I on YouTube within weeks, and I just uploaded it and went to sleep!
I could always hope and dream my music can reach that many people but to see it actually come to life I have to say I’m very grateful for the internet.
We always have to acknowledge just as powerful it is it’s also very detrimental to people’s mental health especially in our industry.
Just remember to always be kind on the internet because it’s a powerful tool that can be used to spread love.
What do your plans for the future include?
I plan on releasing new music all year, and excited to start announcing some tours and surprise appearances!
I plan on debuting my first full album ever and I’m so excited to give the world a body of work to grow with.
What is your advice for young and emerging artists?
You can never stop doing what you love. Eat sleep breathe and most importantly, believe that this was meant for you!
I have overcome every obstacle alone, but never quit. You may lose your home, your mind, and even your closest friends, you may be told by those you love this will never work.
Let me be a testament as an independent artist defying all odds — who just did a groundbreaking, universal song and video with the world’s favorite rapper — that you can achieve anything!
What does the word success mean to you?
Success is a mindset, to overcome my personal goals but to most importantly be proud of myself.
I feel successful every time someone reaches out and tells me my music helped them, because my calls for help were heard and that’s enough success for me.
What would you like to tell our readers about your new music? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)
This new music is not only proof that you can achieve the impossible, but it’s my own personal calls for help.
My own thoughts of pain and loneliness to not only release that energy from me but to comfort anyone in any walk of life who feels they have nowhere to turn, and no one to talk to.
I want every record to make it very clear to every single listener who relates to these cries that You are seen. You are heard. And you are beautiful.
