Kate Mara chatted about starring in the series “Imperfect Women” on Apple TV, where she worked with Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington.

In the new psychological thriller TV series “Imperfect Women,” nothing stays secret forever.

It is based on Araminta Hall’s book of the same name. It will be available to stream on Apple TV on March 18th.

Kate Mara stars as Nancy alongside Elisabeth Moss as Mary and Kerry Washington as Eleanor.

“Imperfect Women” examines a crime that shatters the lives of three women in a decades-long friendship.

The unconventional thriller explores guilt and retribution, love and betrayal, and the compromises we make that irrevocably alter our lives.

As the investigation unravels, so does the truth about how even the closest friendships may not be what they seem.

Mara on exploring the duality of the characters

At the heart of “Imperfect Women” is a sisterhood between these characters but it also reveals cracks in those friendships.

On what interested her most to explore that duality, Mara said, “It’s fun to be able to play the complexities of human beings, and the complexities that we have with our closest friends. That’s really interesting.”

“I feel like I haven’t really had the opportunity to explore those kinds of relationships in the projects I’ve done,” she noted.

“I’ve done projects that deal with relationships between romantic partners and families or family members, but not necessarily friendships,” she admitted.

“So, I thought this was an interesting thing to explore,” Mara added.

Mara on filming the show in Los Angeles

On filming in Los Angeles, Mara shared, “Well, when we filmed this, I was living here still. I’ve lived here for like 23 years or so. I mostly lived in Los Feliz and the Silver Lake area.”

“So, I really don’t live there anymore,” Mara attested. “”I moved to New York, but I have a really soft spot for the Silver Lake Reservoir and the little village.”

“There are some great coffee shops over there that are run by some incredible people and there’s a little park there that my kids grew up going to. So, I have a soft spot for that area,” she elaborated.

Mara on her definition of a friendship

On her definition of a friendship, Mara stated, “I think there are different levels of friends, for sure.”

Mara reveals her favorite sandwich

When asked about her favorite sandwich, she revealed, “I like a vegan breakfast sandwich. There is one at the Orchard Grocer in New York City.”

“It’s on a vegan croissant. It’s not healthy. It’s on a vegan croissant with just egg and some kind of vegan bacon, some mayo, and some avocado. It’s so good,” she admitted.

Working with costume designer Tiffany Hasbourne

On working with costume designer TIffany Hasbourne, Mara said, “Well, she is amazing! Tiffany is so collaborative, and in my experience working with her, her No. 1 goal was to make you feel comfortable enough to help service your character and your performance.”

“If you weren’t comfortable, then there was no reason for you wearing it. That’s how I really felt when I was working with her. I felt the clothing, especially for Nancy, was so helpful in portraying my character, especially since she is so different than me,” she explained.

“When I put on the clothes, I just sit differently, I walk differently, and it really helps immensely. For this project especially, I would say that’s true for my character because whenever she is dressed, she is always so put together,” she elaborated.

“In real life, I just don’t spend that much time thinking about what I’m going to wear unless I’m going on a red carpet or something,” she admitted. “For Nancy, it’s every day that she is waiting for a specific moment for her to shine.”

“So, I felt it was a very collaborative experience working with our costume designer,” she added.

Closing thoughts on ‘Imperfect Women’

The three female protagonists in “Imperfect Women” are layered, intriguing, and relatable. All of us have known a Nancy, an Eleanor, or a Mary in our lives.

For fans and viewers, she remarked about this series, “I think that the show is just a really fun watch. I’m not really concerned about people taking something from it, except enjoyment.”

“I want them to have the feeling where they can’t wait for next week,” she said.

“It’s entertainment, which I think is so therapeutic. It’s just fun and I think that’s important, especially to have that escape in our lives,” she explained.
