K Phillips talks tour with Rob Thomas and Counting Crows (Includes interview)

Regarding this forthcoming tour, he said, “It feels surreal. It feels like I’m going to wake up from this dream. They were my heroes when I was just starting out, or even before I made music my life. They were the first great professional songwriters that I heard. I feel like I won the lottery. It’s amazing.”

They will be performing at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh on Long Island. “I can’t wait to play Jones Beach. I love that place. The New York fans are the best fans in the world,” he said.

In mid-August, he will be playing a solo concert at the Rockwood Music Hall in New York. “When I play solo gigs, there is a lot more storytelling and I get to play sadder songs, and it’s a lot more intimate,” he said. “I come from a long line of songwriters and I’m glad I get to flex that muscle and walk in the footsteps of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, who played solo acoustic gigs.”

On his upcoming studio album, he revealed that it is a break-up record. “It’s the greatest break-up record that’s ever been written by me,” he explained.

His songwriting is inspired by his ability to connect with human experiences. Phillips was named after Kris Kristofferson, whom he praised as one of “America’s greatest writers.”
