Filmmaker and actor Josh Murray chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about his role on the ABC daytime drama “General Hospital,” as well as the films “Gym Rat” and “The Missing Twin,” as well as being an actor in the digital age.

American track and field icon Jesse Owens once said: “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” Josh Murray is an actor, filmmaker, and inspirational individual that embodies this quote by the late four-time Olympic medalist.

‘General Hospital’

He played the role of Russel on “General Hospital,” the villainous Australian guard that has been holding Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) captive. “The role of Russel is everything I could ask for on ‘General Hospital.’ I particularly like bending myself in new directions, especially with the voice. Playing an Australian character is such a blast,” he said.

“One of the biggest compliments that I get as an actor is when other people find out that it was me playing that role,” he said. “I also loved the action scenes, those were definitely up my alley.”

Murray had great words about working with Emmy-nominated actor Cameron Mathison (who has been cast as the new Drew on the show). “Cameron is great. He is probably the nicest guy in show business. Cameron is an absolute pleasure and a joy to work with and you feel like you are buddies as soon as you start,” he said.

Their scenes together earned a favorable review from Digital Journal.

The digital age

On being an actor in the digital age, Murray said, “Personally, I love the theater experience. I hope and believe that it’s never going to go away. I enjoy watching movies in the IMAX theater and it’s just an unforgettable experience, and just so enjoyable. I never want that to go away either.”

“As an actor, I enjoy having new and varied opportunities. It has really distributed and expanded the number of options and shows, and it makes it easier for people to find shows,” he added.

‘Gym Rat’ film

In the film “Gym Rat” he plays Lonnie. “‘Gym Rat’ was quite an experience and it continues to be because we haven’t fully finished it,” he said. “This was my first foray as a producer and lead actor for a feature film. It was a big undertaking and a huge learning experience for me. We are getting close to bringing it home.”

‘The Missing Twin’

In addition, he plays the role of Connor Markham in “The Missing Twin.” “It was fun to play the hero and the family man, as well as the cop in an action role. It was fun to do both and play a good family man and a loving husband. We got to see that this past weekend at the premiere. It was a lovely experience working with Alaina Huffman, she is such a pro, and the Scarola twins, which are on ‘General Hospital’ right now,” he said.

In his personal life, he revealed that he recently got married, and shared the wedding photos on his Instagram page. “That was a dream and a prayer come true,” he said. “I couldn’t be more blessed or grateful to be doing life with Catherine finally.”

On the title of the current chapter of his life, he said, “New Horizons.” “A lot of the things that I have been working towards and waiting for many years have happened this year so it has been a ‘dreams come true’ chapter for me, and now I am moving on to new dreams,” he explained.

Fitness

Murray is passionate about fitness and staying active. If he were to do any track and field event, he shared that it would be the 200 meter sprint. “I like to move fast, but I don’t like the longer distances. I like speed and intensity but I like to have a little time to get into the swing of things, I don’t want the race to be done in an instant,” he said.

He listed the “freestyle” as his favorite stroke in swimming. “I was actually swimming in the ocean this morning,” he said. “I love swimming and the freestyle stroke is all that I do.”

Success

Regarding his definition of success, he said, “Success is about achieving and living out your God-given purpose.”

For his fans, Murray concluded, “I was surprised at how many people from the first few episodes were already reaching out to me about my character, and finding me on social media, and they have been commenting on my role. The fans have been quite engaged.”
