America’s top electronic producer and DJ Jauz chatted about his new music, which includes the track “S.O.S.”

How did “S.O.S.” come about?

The Zeds Dead guys and I are always passing song ideas back and forth, and I think SOS came from a night where Dylan (D.C.) happened to be in LA staying with Zack (Hooks) so we all decided to meet up in the studio with no real plans.

They had the vocal already from Nicole and played it for me, we started doodling some ideas on guitar and it all kinda started coming together.

I ended up pulling out the bass that I used on the Trampoline remix for this one because they felt really similar vibe-wise, but we tweaked it and updated it for 2023.

The song came together really naturally and it has to be my favorite track I’ve done with the guys by a long shot.

What inspires your music and songwriting?

I think it really depends on what’s going on in life for me. Travelling and being at shows and festivals can inspire me musically a lot, but at the same time being at home doing nothing and recharging can help reset my creativity as well.

The biggest thing for me is I just don’t try to push it – I can tell when I’m not writing music for any reason other than “I feel like I should be,” so when I’m in one of those periods I let myself take a breather, and by going out and doing things in life outside of music it’ll refill my tank,, so to speak.

How does it feel to be an electronic artist in the digital age (now with streaming and technology being so prevalent)

I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t the digital age. Being able to self release on Soundcloud back in the day is the only reason I was able to put myself out there, get noticed by blogs, my manager, other artists, etc.

A lot of people like to talk about how tough it is to make it as a musician now because of technology, but I would argue that it’s actually never been easier to get noticed.

What is your advice for young and aspiring electronic artists?

If people are telling you no, it’s not their fault or their problem. Make it a “you” problem. My life changed when I stopped blaming outside factors for my lack of success, and decided that there must be something that I’m missing, that I’m not doing right, that I could be doing better, etc. That’s when everything started going in the right direction.

What do your plans for the future include?

I don’t wanna spill the beans to much, but 2023 is the 5 year anniversary for a few things that are important to me, and if you do some googling it wouldn’t be hard to figure out what I’m referring to. So we have some special things planned for both of those projects, plus a TON of Off The Deep end records on the way as well as a few extra special records I’m super excited about.

Which artists would you like to do a dream collab with and why?

I always say this, but Martin Garrix or Calvin Harris. I would just love to sit in a studio with either of them and watch how they work – they’re both absolutely lovely people and so prolific in their careers, so more than even to just do a song with them, I’d love to learn from them.

What does the word success mean to you?

That’s tough. Because half of me feels like I’ve achieved it, but the other half feels like I’m nowhere near it. On one side I get to live my dream as a career, I can support my family, put a roof over our heads, etc. But at the same time, I know how much more potential is out there and I’m not sure I’ll feel fulfilled unless I try my hardest to get out there and achieve it.

What would you like to tell our readers about “S.O.S.”? (what’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)

“S.O.S.” has been my favorite song to close out my sets with for the last year and a half and I’m so glad everyone seems to be loving it! I can’t wait to play it at a festival this year and watch you all sing along!
