Acclaimed jazz and pop vocalist Jane Monheit chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about her latest album “Come What May” and her 20th anniversary in the music business.

“The pandemic presented a perfect opportunity to finally focus on making an album and it gave me a break from touring,” she said. “I feel like a lot of artists had the same ideas that I did.”

This album is available on CD, digital, and streaming formats as of March 12. It was co-produced by Jane Monheit, Wayne Haun, and Jamey Tate, and it coincides with her 20th anniversary as a bestselling Billboard pop and jazz recording artist. “I can’t believe it. 20 years went by very quickly,” she admitted.

“This is music that I’ve known since I was born, it has been with me my entire life, so the song choices are always totally instinctive what I do at any given time,” she said about the song selection process for the album. “It’s always as simple as that,” she said.

On life during the quarantine, she said, “It has been really well. Work is starting to come in again, which is really nice. I am thrilled that they approved the vaccine for 12 to 15-year-olds since I have a teenager here at home.”

Monheit listed English jazz-pop artist Jamie Cullum as her dream male duet choice in music. “I’ve worked with so many of my heroes already but Jamie is amazing, he has my favorite voice in the world,” she said.

On being an artist in the digital age, Monheit said, “It’s a difficult quandary, one on end, artists hardly make any money from streaming at all. On the plus side, so many more people have access to our music, so you try to make the best out of it.”

Regarding the title of the current chapter of her life, she responded, “Come What May.” “I would name it after my album because that’s where we are all at right now. We are all surviving,” she said.

Monheit defined the word success as “a happy kid.”

Come What May is available on digital service providers by clicking here. “I really want people to find some real joy in there as well as some release and hope,” she said.
