Canadian actor James Tupper (“Big Little Lies”) chatted about his new movie “Fall Into Winter,” which will premiere on Great American Family next weekend.

Byron Pulsifer once said: “Imagine, dream, and believe in yourself. With determination and belief, you will be surprised at what you accomplish.” This quote applies to James Tupper.

Tupper is known for his roles as Jack Slattery on the ABC television series “Men in Trees,” Dr. Chris Sands on the NBC medical drama series “Mercy,” and David Clarke on ABC’s “Revenge.”

He also starred as Joshua Copeland in the post-apocalyptic thriller “Aftermath” on Space in Canada and Syfy in the U.S. “I loved that show,” he admitted. “I wish they had done another season.”

Tupper is also known for playing Nathan Carlson in “Big Little Lies.” “That was great. I hope they do a third season. Being on that show was like being at the halftime at the NBA finals. Everyone in that room was so talented. My family at home couldn’t believe I was working with Meryl Streep,” he said.

‘Fall Into Winter’

In the new movie “Fall Into Winter,” Tupper stars opposite Lori Loughlin. It will premiere on Saturday, January 28 on Great American Family. “It was wonderful. Lori was incredible to work with, and she is as sweet as they come,” he said.

“This is my first film with Great American Family. I’ve known Bill Abbott because he used to run Hallmark, he is a really wonderful guy,” he said.

The synopsis is as follows: Life quickly changes for Kerry as she has to work alongside to her high school nemesis, Brooks (James Tupper), an old friend of her brother’s who unexpectedly buys into Kerry’s family-owned candy shop.

“My character, Brooks, has been burned in the past, he believed in a woman and it didn’t work out. He pivoted and he decided to run a small business, which is a chocolate shop,” he said.

“It turns out that the chocolate is very delicious but even more wonderful than that is the woman that runs it,” he added.

On being an actor in the digital age, Tupper said, “I’m not sure that I am quite there yet. I have a son who is 13 years old and he is threatening to make me better at the digital age. I am an analoger.”

Motivations as an actor

Regarding his daily motivations as an actor, he said, “It’s about believing in a world that you create, and that has always been a fascinating thing for me. You see Robert De Niro and he just disappears right into a character, and he is complete gone, and the idea of doing that is really fascinating. It’s not your mental brain that is doing it, it’s an instinct inside of you and you are just becoming that person.”

For young and aspiring actors, he said, “Take fountain.” “You really need to study, train, and you need to work hard. You need to take classes and you need to put in the work. Never retire and never give up,” he said.

He acknowledged that there was a silver lining for him during the pandemic. “I spent the whole time with my son, who was 11 years old then, and we had two dogs, and they were the silver lining because they made us feel very normal,” he said.

Tupper added that the pandemic allowed him to hone his cooking skills, and he took on the guitar. “I made risotto for the first time and I baked English muffins and pizzas at home. Also, I made Tom Yum Soup, and my son was my guinea pig,” he said.

Defining moments

On his defining moments, he said, “When I was really young, I had a pregnant girlfriend and I helped her raise that girl for 10 years, and she stills calls me ‘dad’. Any time you make yourself a a part of something bigger than what your little needs are, then your heart gets full, and that defined who I was as a person.”

Success

Regarding his definition of the word success, Tupper said, “Success means having a loving relationship with being happy, and healthy kids.”
