Veteran actor James Moses Black chatted about starring in the new Universal Pictures film “Renfield,” and his many other acting projects.

In the comedy horror movie “Renfield,” he stars opposite Oscar winner Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult. “The movie was good. In my opinion, a lot of people missed the point of the movie, it was supposed to be satire,” he said.

“This was my second time working with Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage,” he admitted. “It was cool to be reunited with both of them.”

Black also starred as U.S. Army Colonel Murduch in the Amazon Prime TV series S.O.Z: Soldados o Zombies, and he had a supporting role in Vertical Entertainment’s Lansky.

S.O.Z Soldados o Zombies was a great experience, I went to Mexico City for a month of filming so that was fun,” he said. “I had never been to Mexico City before. I also did Lansky right before the pandemic broke out.”

Next, Black shared that he can be seen in the STX Entertainment comedy, Queenpins starring Kristen Bell and Vince Vaughn, and also guest stars in two upcoming episodes of Liza On Demand. “Queenpins was cool because it was an offer-only. I had never met Kristen Bell before or Vince Vaughn, so it was great to meet them. It was a very lively set,” he said.

On being a part of Liza On Demand, he said, “Liza Koshy is one funny young person. We filmed it in the forests of Los Angeles, she was super cool and super funny. I never knew who she was until I did the show.”

Black also recurred as Reverend Hawley, a neighborhood preacher/counselor who inspires Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) to continue his run for office in NBC’s wildly popular This is Us series, and portrayed Brother Jamal in the FX  series, Snowfall.

“Working with my man Sterling K. Brown was just incredible. I am an actor that loves to work,” he said. “Also, Snowfall was a cool deal for me. The ending in the film was different compared to the real story.”

He was Sasha the henchman to Richard Dreyfuss’ character in director/star Cuba Gooding’s drama, Bayou Caviar, and he was Coach Oz in writer and director Eric Champnella’s sports drama, Alex and Me.

“Richard Dreyfuss was on Bayou Caviar with us, and it was interesting to see these 10-foot alligators. Overall, it was a good experience,” he said.
