Jake Miller’s ‘Sunshine’ pays tribute to friend lost to suicide

Jake Miller’s music video for “Sunshine” is dedicated to the rapper’s friend, Dylan, who committed suicide on February 12, 2015, according to the music video and MTV. According to the music video’s press release, the “Sunshine” video will be shown every hour across MTV, MTV Hits, and mtvU, in conjunction with being featured on the MTV.com homepage, music hub, and on Miller’s page.

“This video is not about me, it’s about Dylan and the millions of kids going through what Dylan went through,” Miller added in the music video’s press released and continued, “If this video can prevent even one suicide, that would be incredible. I am so excited and eager to share this video with the world. I hope it makes a big impact.”

“I was in the studio in LA. and I got the phone call that he had passed away and I was so completely distraught over it,” Miller told MTV and continued, “I went straight home, grabbed my guitar, went outside and wrote the whole song from start to finish, and the next day I got into the studio and recorded it.”

The video was released at a paramount time — during National Suicide Prevention Week, as Miller hopes to help anyone who is fighting similar battles to those which Dylan combatted.

“I want you to take away from this video and from the song that things will always get better, you never have to end your life,” Miller said to MTV and continued, “There are so many people that care about you and will be affected by that decision. I think if Dylan knew how many people would be affected by what he did, I’m not sure if he still would have done it. I hope he wouldn’t have done it.”

In addition, the organization Love is Louder — a project of The Jed Foundation which was created with actress Brittany Snow in order to support anyone feeling mistreated, misunderstood, or alone — has published the “Sunshine” music video on its website and social media pages. The Pitch Perfect actress has also posted about the music video premiere on her personal Instagram.
