Actor Jake Getman spoke about voicing the character Caleb in the Disney/Pixar film “Elio.”

The synopsis is: This summer, moviegoers will meet Elio, an 11-year-old whose biggest wish is to get abducted by aliens, as well as his Aunt Olga (voiced by Academy Award winner Zoe Saldaña), and Glordon, Elio’s unexpected first friend who happens to be an alien.

In this big-screen adventure, Elio will travel millions of miles across the universe encountering a host of out-of-this world creatures who just might help him figure out exactly where he belongs.

‘Elio’ experience

On his experience in “Elio,” Getman remarked, “It was honestly a fantastic experience. Working with Disney and Pixar—two of the biggest names in animation—was incredible.

Getman on voicing Caleb

Caleb is a little unpredictable, which made him fun to me. I really liked that he was just like a normal person and reacts like one.

The digital age

On being a part of the digital age, he said, “Personally, I love seeing all the new advancements in technology because oftentimes it makes my life easier.”

“Everything is constantly changing and evolving, so as an actor, you have to move with it,” he added.

Advice for young and emerging actors

For young and emerging actors, he stated, “You are your own worst enemy. It depends on how resilient you are and if you’re willing to go the distance.”

“I’ve heard the word ‘no’ more times than I can count, but it stopped bothering me years ago,” he noted.

“As long as you are willing to commit and don’t give up when things don’t go your way, you’ll be okay,” he added.

Future plans

Regarding his future plans, he shared, “I’ve been in the industry for over a decade and have no plans to leave, so I’ll be here and continuing to put the work in—because that’s all I can do.”

Success

On his definition of the word success, Getman responded, “I’m not one to chase fame and never will be, but success to me means being stable.”

“The industry is extremely inconsistent and unpredictable, so success to me is being stable when the industry isn’t,” he added.

Closing thoughts on ‘Elio’

For fans and viewers, he expressed about “Elio,” “The film is about connection, identity, and what it means to be seen.”

“I hope people walk away feeling more comfortable and feeling less alone, no matter how different they feel,” he noted.

“At its heart, it’s a story about belonging, and I think that’s something everyone can relate to,” he concluded.
