Jake Denison chatted about starring in the Fox reality series “Extracted.”
How does it feel to be a part of “Extracted”? (What drew you to this show?)
I feel extremely lucky to have been a part of Extracted. My entire experience in the wilderness was an incredible adventure and I was fortunate enough to share it with my brothers.
From the beginning, I was drawn to the show because it sounded like a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a competitive outdoor adventure in a way that no one else ever has.
What did this show teach you about yourself?
It taught me that with mental resilience and a positive mindset, even the toughest obstacles can be overcome.
It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, no matter how much you take you have to forge ahead.
What is the hardest part about “Extracted”?
Mentally, it was exhausting and everyday was a challenge either by the design of the show or to just keep my thoughts in check and be positive.
My biggest struggle was allowing myself to think about my wife and kids back home which made me feel homesick and worry.
I knew they were fine, and my wife had everything under control, but it didn’t stop me from worrying about them.
You are also a mortgage loan officer… How is that job in your day-to-day life?
It’s a challenging job with a good amount of stress involved. It can also be very rewarding when I get to help people buy their first home or build a home.
However, if you try to find a connection from working in an air-conditioned office all day to being a survivalist, you won’t find one.
Were there any moments in your life or career that have helped define you?
My first child being born was a big moment and changed me for the better. I wouldn’t point towards any single moments necessarily, instead I’d point to the people around me that have been significant influences in my life.
I’m fortunate to have been raised in a great family, having a solid circle of loyal, lifelong friends, and marrying a woman that has made me a stronger person.
What is your advice for young and aspiring survivalists?
From my limited experience, I would suggest knowledge and adaptability, but you would probably want to talk to someone with more experience than me who actually knows what they are doing!
What do your plans for the future include?
I don’t have set in stone plans currently, but this experience has taught me to be open to opportunities because you never know what form they come in.
If Extracted called me back for a season in the future, I wouldn’t hesitate to say “yes.”
What does the word success mean to you? (My favorite question)
Success is personal, and it depends on your values, goals and what brings you fulfillment. Everyone views success differently so think hard on what is important to you and go after that.
What would you like to tell our readers about “Extracted”? (What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)
What you are seeing is raw emotion, and totally unscripted competition. The survivalists had no clue what was going on which kept us on edge all day waiting for the next challenge.
We had no idea how the game was being played because we weren’t told or instructed on much of anything. Like all of you, my fellow survivalists and I are watching this for the first time as well, so it’s just as fun and exciting for us!
All new episodes of “Extracted” air on Mondays on Fox, and the next day on Hulu; moreover, there will be an all-new episode of “Extracted” tonight.
