Rowling earned the member of the Order of the Companions of Honour recognition for her services to literature and philanthropy. She is one of the world’s most successful authors (known for writing the Harry Potter series), and she is also known for her avid charitable work.
In 2001, Rowling was previously made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE), and in 2002, she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL). Yesterday, June 26, marked the 20-year anniversary of her first book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. “20 years ago today a world that I had lived in alone was suddenly open to others. It’s been wonderful. Thank you,” Rowling posted on her Twitter page.
According to the Sunday Times Rich List, J.K. Rowling ranks third on the “Scotland Giving List” for her philanthropy.
Rowling serves as president of Gingerbread, which provides advice to single parents. The acclaimed author also founded Lumos, a charity that helps children.
