Actor Tyler Hynes chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about his new original Hallmark film “An Unexpected Christmas,” which premieres on November 26 on the Hallmark Channel.

“An Unexpected Christmas” is a part of the Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas” programming event, the destination for holiday entertainment.

‘An Unexpected Christmas’

Hynes stars in “An Unexpected Christmas” alongside Bethany Joy Lenz of “One Tree Hill” and “Five Star Christmas” fame. Charles Cooper serves as producer of “An Unexpected Christmas”; moreover, Michael Robison directed the movie from a screenplay by Paul Campbell. “It was good,” he admitted. “Everybody was very nice and the script was really good.”

“Paul Campbell did an incredible job. He is very talented and he is definitely the MVP of this movie,” he added. “He wrote a great script and he was able to maintain great quality throughout the process of shooting and re-writing.”

The synopsis is as follows: Jamie (Tyler Hynes) hasn’t told his family that he and his now ex-girlfriend Emily (Bethany Joy Lenz) broke up. After an inopportune run-in with Emily at the train station in his hometown, Jamie convinces her to pretend they are still a couple to avoid ruining Christmas for his family. “Jamie was fun to play since he is basically a screw-up throughout the whole movie. Although he is making all of the wrong moves, a lot of men and women can relate to him, and some people might see themselves in that relationship. He’s a guy to root for and I wanted to make him more interesting,” he said.

Jamie and Emily subsequently engage in a week-long trick of participating in his family’s holiday activities together. While they’re stuck in his family’s home, the pair discovers their relationship might still have some potential, resulting in a very unexpected Christmas, hence the title.

“Working with Bethany Joy Lenz was great. She works hard and she is very focused. She has the ability to make things seem a little more natural,” he said.

‘AFK’ short film

He opened up about writing, producing, and directing the short indie film “AFK.” “I did ‘AFK’ a while ago,” he recalled. “That was a journey. It was my first real experience to push production value and pace. It took a year to actually complete, and I wore many hats for that film. It was good, it turned into a nice, fun ride. The game behind the camera is much different than the game in front of the camera.”

‘Roadhouse Romance’

Most recently, Hynes starred in the Hallmark film “Roadhouse Romance” with country star Lauren Alaina, and it earned a favorable review from Digital Journal.

Visiting Greece

Hynes had great words about visiting Greece. “There is nothing better in this world than Greece,” he said. “Greece was my Achilles heel. The country of Greece is spectacular. I’ve been all over the world, and Greece is definitely the end game.”

For his fans, he concluded about “An Unexpected Christmas,” “I want the fans to appreciate Paul Campbell’s work. He is an emerging writer in this genre at Hallmark. He is a very talented man. I hope this movie gives people patience with the people that they love. It’s about overcoming yourself to appreciate what you have, and that’s a nice message to think about over the holidays.”
