Country singer-songwriter Russell Dickerson chatted about his latest studio country album “Famous Back Home.”
This marks his fourth career musical effort, and it was released on August 22nd via Triple Tigers. Dickerson co-wrote 10 out of the 12 tracks on the CD.
Song selection approach for the album
“I’ve always said the most important place to be famous is at home,” Dickerson admitted. “That’s what this new record is about… my family, my roots, and remembering what really matters even when life is moving a million miles an hour.”
“I think this has the album I’ve spent the most on sequencing the songs,” he said. “I wanted to keep the energy upfront.”
Theme of the album
When asked by this journalist about whether or not he was going for a theme, Dickerson responded, “As far as the theme goes, I don’t think of myself as a guy that is going for a theme.”
“Just from a writing perspective, I don’t want to put on a caricature for this album; I don’t want to do that. I want to write from a place of just where I am at and I want to write about what I am excited about. My last break-up was 15 years ago,” he elaborated.
“I go in every day not too weighed down by what the theme would be. I just want to walk in each day and speak from the heart and sing from the heart. Hopefully, I can dig into a more emotional place and just really open-handedly create,” he explained.
“Every record I’ve made has been true to where I was at that point in my life,” Dickerson said.
“This one just happens to capture me as an artist, as a dad, and a husband all at once. That’s why it feels so special,” he acknowledged.
Dickerson defines success
Regarding his definition of success, Dickerson stated, “Without reverting to the fame, my family is my priority.”
“In some ways, it is easier to prioritize now. I am at a point where ‘no’ is an acceptable answer for once. I flew home the other day to spend 14 hours with my kids, so being able to do that is great,” he said.
“On a career mode, success is enjoyment,” he exclaimed. “Am I enjoying it or am I striving too hard? Am I focused on the numbers and the charts or am I in a hands-off and trusting that God got me where I am supposed to be and that I am enjoying this ride.”
“It has been a fun place to push through those emotions and pray through those emotions and keep fighting hoping that something is going to happen. It’s just cool to be in a place where I can just chill and enjoy this career. Right now, I’m enjoying the view,” he concluded.
