Actress Maria Elisa Camargo chatted about starring in the new action crime film “Off the Grid” opposite Josh Duhamel and David Lipper.
The movie, directed by Johnny Martin, is in theaters, On Demand, and on digital as of June 27, 2025.
‘Off the Grid’
On being a part of the thriller “Off the Grid,” she remarked, It was one of the most magical, deep, and insane experiences of my life… not just on a professional level but on a human level as well. That was a surprise. I never expected it to be such a profound human experience.”
“To be honest, I thought it was going to be darker, but I was surrounded by some of the most kind and generous human beings,” she noted. “It turned out to be the brightest and most colorful experience.”
“This film became a story about the simple things,” she admitted. “It reminds you that the small things matter, and the connections are what really defines us as human beings.”
“This movie was about two people that saw each other through their secrets and their demons, and it was a lot more subtle, sophisticated and unexpected,” she added.
Playing her character Josey
On playing her character Josey, she said, “I love how my character went through a lot of transformations. She evolved into different things throughout the story. “
“Originally, she was supposed to be from Italy, and then from Spain, and then she was going to be a Mississippi Girl — a southern belle. In the end, the day that I was starting to shoot, they decided they wanted me to be a Latina,” she explained.
“The director, Johnny Martin, gave me so much freedom to re-design this character, and to add layers and complexities to her,” she noted.
“Johnny invested so much of his own time and beautiful direction in this character to create something special and something that made a difference,” she admitted.
“The essence remained the same! She had this motherly love, and she held together her community. She just held everyone together, she took care of her people, and she is in control of her community that’s why she is so intrigued in Josh’s character Guy,” she elaborated.
“Also, I found a connection between them, which I found it to be so sophisticated,” she added.
Working with Josh Duhamel
On working with Emmy winner Josh Duhamel, she said, “Working with Josh was the craziest surprise for me. I never expected him to be such a down to earth guy.”
“Josh is funny and he is a MacGyver himself, and he wants to be ‘off the grid’ himself. He is a very sweet, spiritual and very connected and evolved human being,” she said.
“Just like there is a lot of essence of me in Josey, there is a lot of him in Guy, and it was interesting to discover him through both angles: fiction and reality. Also, we laughed so hard,” she noted.
“From the moment we started joking, we realized it was going to be instant chemistry, friendship and coolness. He was very disciplined, and he brought a lot to this movie as a producer. What more can I ask for? Especially when I am the new girl in town, and he’s the star that he is. So, that was a very positive surprise,” she elaborated.
Working with David Lipper
“David is awesome too,” she exclaimed. “David acted with me in one of the scenes, and there we got to meet each other for real. That was also an instant connection.”
“I would love to work with David more because of the human being that he is,” she added.
Lessons learned from this story
On the lessons learned from this story, she expressed, “The story taught me a lot about my own values as a human being. It taught me that I am also a loner like Guy and I am chasing my dreams and escaping from the normal life and escaping from my own demons. So, I can relate to that.”
“I also remember through the story the importance of community and family,” she underscored.
“Filming it taught me that I needed 20+ years of experience to do this movie. It taught me that friendships, family, and connections should be our biggest priority and hopefully, people understand that,” she explained.
“Also, vulnerability is so important and sometimes, you have to face it to remember who you are, and I feel there is a lot of that in this movie, even though it’s an action movie, and that’s the surprising part of it,” she concluded.
