Interview: Magician Justin Flom talks new magic book, new baby (Includes interview)

Most recently, Flom’s debut book Adventures of a Kid Magician was released, and it coincided with his first appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on June 16. The book is based on his “magical” childhood. Flom co-wrote the book with his father, Scott Flom, a fellow magician, and his aunt, Judy Flom-Hill, who has written two suspense novels. “We are so excited to have it out. It is a unique thing, since I grew up on magic books that I got from the library. We created this story book where this young character, Zach, gets in and out of trouble using magic tracks and at the end of each chapter, you get to learn the magic that was used in the chapter. You get to learn it from me on video, and kids are getting to learn it directly from me. Also, the book is a good read because the passwords to the videos are hidden inside the chapter, so you have to read the chapter to be able to watch the video,” he said. “What is really cool is that we are seeing a surge of young girl magicians. In the book, there is a young girl magician, so there is a role model for them.”

Flom holds the distinction of being the first magician ever to perform card tricks for a sold-out crowd at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City, and he performed magic as the host of hit country duo Florida Georgia Line’s 2015 nationwide headlining tour.

In his personal life, he revealed that he and his wife, Jocelynn, are expecting their first child. “We did the pregnancy announcement with a card trick. My parents have been waiting for a really long time, so when they found out, they freaked out. It was really funny,” he said.

Each day, Flom is motivated by his desire to create new magic. “Every single day, I want to try and produce something, whether it is a Snapchat, or a video or a new trick that I am working on. I always have to be doing something. That’s what keeps me going,” he said. “I took a few days off last week and I was miserable. I would much rather do work all the time, since I love it so much.”

In the future, Flom hopes to do his own headlining tour, his own TV show, and “a whole bunch of new magic that has never been seen before.”
