In the upcoming magic show at the Palace Theatre in New York City, Leigh is portraying The Conjuress, whose specialty is theatrical elegance. “I’ve been developing the role for the last two years,” she said. “It first debuted in Australia, and this will be the third winter of the show. It’s the Broadway debut, and we are really excited,” she said, with a sweet laugh.
She continued, “The show is set in the Golden Age of magic, where the illusionists of that time period were the stars of their day. If you could imagine the movie The Prestige, think back to that time period, from the early 1900s until the advent of film, where the magicians were at the top of the bills of all the theaters and stages, including female magicians that were headlining at that time. That’s very exciting, and this is a celebration of the Golden Age of magic. You will see classic things reinvented and recreated, and you’ll see classic things with new surprises and some new inventions as well.”
One of her favorite demonstrations that Leigh enjoys doing is the “mystic sphere.” “It’s a beautiful piece that I have been working on for the last few years. It is a recreation of the classic floating sphere,” she said. “It will have a new effect to it. Then, it is going to do some pretty spectacular things.”
Leigh will be sharing the stage with The Clairvoyants, who were the runner-up winners of the eleventh season of America’s Got Talent. “That is really exciting for the show,” she said. “They are relatively new in the scene, and they are very ambitious and very dedicated. There is a lot of passion that goes into what they are doing. What they do is really astounding in this day and age. I would like to see the effect that it has on the audience. That’s what really makes an impact.”
For aspiring female magicians, she said, “Do what you love and be true to yourself. You will have to work twice as hard and be twice as good as the men in the business. Just remember, there is always room for a feminine side and make sure that you are doing what you love. There is nothing that can compare when the magic comes from the heart. Hands down it will triumph every time.”
Leigh defined success as “Being proud of what you do, and being proud of what you have.”
