Actor, singer, and dancer Kevin Csolak (“The Outsiders: Musical” alum) chatted about starring in “Gypsy” on Broadway, where he plays Tulsa.

Csolak on his character Tulsa in ‘Gypsy’

Csolak is drawn to his “Gypsy” character, Tulsa, for several reasons. “In a world right now where there is a lot of negativity, Tulsa really in the positive, and in his dreams, and that is something that I really try to encompass each night. That’s a blessing right there in and of itself,” he expressed.

Csolak on his 2025 Chita Rivera Award nomination

Csolak just scored a 2025 Chita Rivera Award nomination for “Outstanding Dancer in a Broadway Show.”

On his Chita Rivera Award nomination, he exclaimed, “I’m over the moon. To be recognized by this community, and to be associated with the name Chita Rivera — in any capacity — makes me feel over the moon.”

“I got to do a few productions of ‘West Side Story’ so I feel like I’ve been close to Chita for a while, and this feels like a full encompassing moment that I still can’t explain,” he acknowledged.

Working with Danny Burstein in ‘Gypsy’

On working with Danny Burstein in “Gypsy,” Csolak said, “I love Danny! He is very professional, and he is the most fun backstage. He is just the nicest guy. I remember seeing him in ‘Moulin Rouge’ when he originated that role, and he got his Tony win for that role.”

“To see Danny do ‘Gypsy’ now is great. Danny and Audra are the most nominated performers for a Tony Award in history (Audra with 11 nominations and Danny being the most-nominated male actor with 8 Tony nods), and that is just incredible,” Csolak said.

“I feel so blessed to be touched and surrounded by their artistry,” he added.

Working with The Kuperman Brothers, and being a part of ‘The Outsiders’ musical

This Chita Rivera Award nomination comes one year after The Kuperman Brothers scored their Chita Rivera Award nomination for choreographing “The Outsiders,” where Csolak and his fellow dancers were also nominated for “Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show.”

“The Kuperman Brothers did something really beautiful with ‘The Outsiders,’ which was unlike anything we had ever seen before,” Csolak said.

“I feel that choreographer Camille A. Brown is doing something similar with ‘Gypsy’ this year,” he elaborated.

Stage of his life

On the title of the current chapter of his life, Csolak revealed, “Dance, dance, dance.” “Just keep dancing,” he said with a sweet laugh.

Success

Regarding his definition of the word success, Csolak said, “I think success doesn’t have a monetary value, I think it means fulfillment in your heart and love. I get to be fulfilled with the artists I get to be a part of this show.”
