Actor Jesse Metcalfe chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about starring in the new original film “Harmony From The Heart,” written by Jessica Lowndes, which will premiere on February 12 on GAC Family.

American track and field legend Jesse Owens once said: “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” Jesse Metcalfe is an actor and individual that embodies this wise quotation by the late four-time Olympic gold medalist.

Jessica Lowndes wrote the film “Harmony From The Heart” and she serves as an executive producer; moreover, she performs several of the movie’s original tunes, which she also wrote and produced. She stars opposite Jesse Metcalfe.

On being a part of “Harmony From The Heart,” Metcalfe said, “It was a really interesting and fun experience. It was my first time not being the top dog on a project that I do since it was Jessica’s baby, which she wrote, produced, and stars in. Jessica also wrote and produced the music for the film. I put a lot of pressure on myself to contribute something and deliver a good performance for her.”

“It was also my first movie for GAC Family, and I wanted to make my mark. I think it all came together. I was really impressed by Jessica, she is very talented and driven. Her work ethic is really strong,” he added.

Synopsis of ‘Harmony From The Heart’

Lowndes stars as Violet, while Metcalfe portrays Dr. Blake Williams. Violet is chasing her dream job, to become a music therapist, and she gets a challenging task from her professor, which helps her realize that she loves helping people and her heart begins to open.

Her department chair, Professor Carver, threatens to prevent her from graduating unless she successfully rehabilitates a patient to speak again by Valentine’s Day, which is only two weeks away, and that patient is her professor’s brother, Charles.

An additional obstacle hurdle is strong, stubborn skepticism about music therapy held by Blake Williams, Charles’ heart surgeon, and his grandson.

Violet feels the pressure to create a near miracle, so she uses music as a medium to help Charles improve his quality of life and he begins to progress.

“This story had a deeper, emotional underpinning to it,” he said. “I was really determined to bring a stronger, emotional foundation to my character and make his backstory a little more clear. The symbolism in the film was all Jessica’s doing.”

On working with Jessica Lowndes, he said, “We have great, mutual respect for each other, and I would work with Jessica again anytime.”

Metcalfe was drawn to his character for several reasons. “I never played a doctor in a television show or movie before,” he said. “The story is about the commonality of pain of Dr. Blake and Violet, and how they both experienced loss at an early age and they are both able to fall in love through the process of rehabilitating this grandfather, and open their hearts again.”

The digital age

On being an actor in the digital age, Metcalfe said, “I love it. Now, in the digital age, auditions, and meetings with directors and producers don’t take place in-person so you can live anywhere you want to live. It gives you a lot more flexibility and freedom to live your life.”

“This industry keeps evolving and changing, and you need to change with it,” he added. “I would like to think that the best of me is still to come. I really want to produce more, I have so much more to give artistically. Hopefully, I can create more opportunities for myself.”

‘Passions’

He originated the role of Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald on the NBC daytime drama “Passions.” “Passions was an amazing training ground for me, especially in regard to memorizing copious amounts of dialogue,” he said. “I had very little acting experience when I booked ‘Passions’ so it was an incredible opportunity to get to learn the craft of acting while getting paid.”

“Now, I really enjoy the process of breaking down scripts, developing my character, and memorizing my lines. It’s a labor of love for me now,” he added.

He had great words about working with Eva Tamargo, who played his on-screen mother, Pilar Lopez-Fitzgerald. “Eva was amazing,” he said. “She was very supportive, loving, and nurturing so it was easy to play her son. Eva was so great, and the whole cast was great. In the early days on that show, we laughed our faces off, we had so much fun.”

Advice for young and aspiring actors

For hopefuls that wish to go into the entertainment industry, Metcalfe said, “Eat, sleep, and breathe the craft of acting, that’s what it’s about. You really need to put in the work and you have to look ahead, and believe in the future of your career.”

‘Fortress’

He opened up about doing the acting film “Fortress,” which was directed by James Cullen Bressack. “I really liked doing action movies. At times, they are a challenge because I am not getting any younger and they really take a toll on your body. You try to be careful but you definitely still take a few bumps and bruises when you do these types of films,” he said.

“James has a lot of vision and talent,” he said. “He’s a young guy and he will go places in his career. It was fun to work with him, and I am looking forward to seeing ‘Fortress 2’, which should be coming out in the near future.”

“Working with Sean Kanan was great. I love Sean Kanan, he is a super down-to-earth guy, and he is not afraid to mix things up. Sean is always game. Natalie Burn was awesome too, she was really fun to work with,” he added.

On the title of the current chapter of his life, Metcalfe responded, “The Crossroads.”

If he were to have any superpower, he revealed that it would be to “live forever.” If he were to do track and field, he shared that he would do the “pole vault.”

He defined the word success simply as “inner peace.”

Metcalfe concluded about “Harmony From The Heart,” “I want to take the audience on some type of journey, this happens to be an emotional journey about the healing power of music. It’s a very romantic movie and there are a lot of funny moments. It’s also a little bit of a tearjerker. It’s a moving film, and I think Jessica Lowndes and I had great chemistry together.”
