Grammy award-winning DJ, artist, producer and remixer Imanbek chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about his new music.

On his new track “123 (Dolly Song),” Imanbek said, “It is pure fun to work remotely these days with people you never met but who share same sense of music and humour. I’m friends with Rompasso and we are on same management so that was pretty easy and logical. With Karma Child, we spoke over zooms and calls so that brought a special element to our collab and it turned out to be a really embracing project.”

“123 (Dolly Song)” is available on Spotify.

Regarding his song “Fighter,” he said, “Fair to say, LP is a massive figure in our part of the world particularly, she has a serious level of respect in the industry and me and my team adore her voice. So, when I found out that we have a connection with her camp I asked my manager to reach out with an unusual idea of a guitar-based song. It is an experiment and I’m a fan of stepping outside of boxes and cliché.”

“Fighter” is available on Spotify.

On his music and songwriting inspirations, he said, “My heart and feelings of pleasure and personal happiness of music. Only things that come from the heart.”

Imanbek won the Grammy Award for “Best Remixed Recording” for “Roses.” “It was a shock and thunder in mind, heart, head. Like a flash that is blinding you. I still feel a bit shocked, to be honest, six months later. Still,” he said.

He had great words about electronic megastar Alan Walker, who did the track “Sweet Dreams” with him. “Alan is a real professional. He is very special and cool. He knows what he is doing and why. I’m proud to know him and to deal with him as in the world of copycats he has his own fingerprint in music and so do I and that is the main point for me to do collaborations. One of my favourite collabs for sure,” he said.

On being an electronic artist in the digital age, he responded, “I don’t know how to answer because I didn’t try anything else. I’m too young and obviously I didn’t catch the previous way of being in the industry, I didn’t experience other situations and approaches of being an artist and being a musician. Probably this is sad but who knows what is the best era, digital or physical as it was before? I guess now there are less romantic components in everything musicians do now, but at the same time the speed of production and range of opportunities grew massively.”

For young and aspiring DJs and producers, he said, “Guys, please be yourselves, be brave to create and please don’t copy. You can copy yourselves in search of a better something but don’t copy others, that’s the way to nowhere. Your music and your style speak and fans know that because they feel that. You can buy subscribers these days but you can’t buy fans.”

On his definition of the word success, he said, “Success to me is the appreciation of my closest people: family and friends. That’s the success because that gives you internal freedom. So, after you get it you can do whatever as your mind is not tied up or restricted with anything. You can get big checks or big deals but you won’t be free after if your deal is bad. You know.”

For his fans, he concluded about his new music, “Treat them as experiments as I love different genres and different styles and I’m happy to try collaborations with as many cool creators as I can so if you were surprised before – please wait, you’ll be surprised even more soon.”
