Interview: Drowners talk album release show in New York (Includes interview)

Regarding their show on June 24 at Baby’s All Right, he said, “Well it’s the day of our record release so we’ll be celebrating that. It’ll be our first proper New York show in a while and our first time playing all the new tunes to a home crowd, ya know? The gig will be wonderful and I’m sure the after-party will too.”

On their upcoming studio album, he said, “We wrote the record over the course of a year and recorded it in New York last winter. We picked ones that would make sense thematically…They’re all kind of about desiring something or someone, hence the title… I think that, thanks to our producer Claudius Mittendorfer, the songs are stronger and better arranged and, instrumentally, the album is a lot more complex than the first one.”

Hitt’s favorite songs on the album include “Troublemaker,” “Conversations With Myself” and “Pick Up The Pace.” “Those are the ones I enjoy playing in rehearsal the most,” he said, prior to noting that his plans for the future are to tour a great deal to promote their music.

His songwriting is inspired by everything he encounters, especially when he eavesdrops on people. “If someone happens to say something interesting, my songwriter radar starts beeping in my head and I write it down. This record especially, as the music was written a lot more collaboratively we ended up having conversations about lyrics, which I’d then take away and work on. So I guess the other guys in the band inspired a lot of it this time round,” he said.

When asked about his dream collaboration choices, he said, “Well, most of the dream collaborators have died this year…given that that list has dwindled I’m not really sure anymore.”

His advice for aspiring bands is to “Keep writing songs cause that’s the only thing that really matters.”

For their fans, he concluded, “I wanna thank them for their support up till now and hope that they enjoy this next record and chapter of Drowners. Cheers!”
