Interview: Dragonette discusses lyric video for ‘Darth Vader’ (Includes interview)

Regarding the lyric video for “Darth Vader,” Kurtz said, “For some reason when I would listen to the song, this radio documentary that I heard would come to mind. The story of a 70 year-old farmer, who, with the help of his wife, transitioned to being a woman. That was how he identified his whole life. The courage and strength involved in that decision is very moving to me. When we wrote the song ‘Darth Vader,’ I knew it wasn’t about learning to be selfish and get what you want. It’s about finding a different kind of strength.”

They collaborated with Sebastien Mua. “Sebastien is an amazingly impressive person. It was a true gift to be able to collaborate with someone so fresh with that kind of vision and all-around beauty,” he said.

He subsequently described the song as an “empowerment” tune with a Daft Punk vibe to it. Their plans for the future include more traveling, making music and “horsing around.”

Each day, they are inspired by the complicated contraction of human emotions. “That’s what gets me into the studio,” he said.
“Finding an interesting thread and tugging on it.”

Kurtz shared that he would love to someday collaborate with Santigold. “Her voice and lyrics are so unique. She’s very inspiring to me,” he said.

For their fans, they concluded, “‘Darth Vader’ is a song that was directed at a sliver inside of me that wanted to be wrenched open and allowed to grow. I hope that people hearing the song are inspired to make some part of them as strong and alive as it deserves to be.”
