Interview: Carlos Diehz talks about starring and finding the humanity in ‘Conclave’

Mexican actor Carlos Diehz chatted about starring opposite Ralph Fiennes in the Oscar-nominated film Conclave,” which was directed by Edward Berger.

The synopsis is: The movie follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting the new Pope.

Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope.

Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the globe, and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the dead Pope’s wake, secrets which could shake the foundations of the Church.

On his experience in this movie, Diehz said, “It was a dream come true, although a bit too quick; however, I am doing my best to enjoy the ride.”

Playing Cardinal Benitez

On playing Cardinal Benitez (of Kabul), he said, “Cardinal Benitez is a mix of San Francis of Assisi, and Saint Ignatius of Loyola; he is a deeply spiritual person but also a leader. He is capable of seeing everyone with a motherly love, nurturing but with authority too.”

Working with Ralph Fiennes

On working opposite Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes, Diehz stated, “It’s amazing to be led by such a seasoned actor. It makes it easier to hit every note and every emotion at a natural pace.”

Lessons learned from this screenplay

When asked about the lessons learned from this screenplay, he reflected, “It reminded me of a mystical phase that I had when I was 19 or 20, and made me remember that I should be a little bit more like Cardinal Benitez every day.”

The digital age

On being an actor in the digital age, he said, “It’s a bit strange and new to see myself, or should I say my performance online. It’s very rewarding though,  to know that this role is resonating with audiences around the world, especially with young people.”

Advice for young and emerging actors

For young and aspiring actors, he said, “Live life to the fullest, meaning observe, enjoy and contemplate your own life and others’ lives so you can inform your performances more naturally.”

Career-defining moments

Regarding his career-defining moments, he shared, “I can say that in my life there have been lots of moments that have shaped me but also I have learned to redefine me as I require to be able to thrive.”

“Life is bitter-sweet but the most important thing is to learn from those bitter-sweet moments,” he added.

Success

On his definition of the word success, Diehz said, “Success means to be happy and satisfied with what you have done, more so when you help other people.”

Closing thoughts on ‘Conclave’

For fans and viewers, Diehz remarked, “What I would like for people to take from this movie is to have a good time, and also to think about how there are always principled people who keep ideals alive through love.”
