International artist Emin talks ‘Boomerang’ and pop music (Includes interview)

On his single “Boomerang,” he said, “I recorded ‘Boomerang’ for my current album, More Amor, and it was scheduled to be our second single from that album. Then, I happened to sit next to Nile at a charity event in NYC in May. He was being honored and I was the guest performer and we really hit it off. I mean, he’s a legend and I knew I wanted to work with him, and started to think, a few weeks after that night, why not sooner than later? So I sent him ‘Boomerang’ and he dug it, and said he had a few ideas for it, and that’s how it all came about.”

It reached No. 22 on the Billboard Dance charts. “You can only feel one thing when you see your work in the charts. Crazy happy! Although CutFather in Denmark produced ‘Boomerang,’ Ralphi Rosario did our American remix which is No. 14 this week on Billboard. I’ve been told that I’m the first Russian/ Azeri ever to break the Top 15 on a Billboard chart, so it’s a really big deal. I couldn’t be happier.”

On pop music, he said, “The funny thing is that a lot of people dismiss pop. They discount it as ‘only pop.’ I’ve got to tell you that there’s nothing harder than trying to create a fresh, interesting, original sounding pop song. In the past I’ve been compared to a few really incredible artists and it’s very flattering, but then you also want to be your own man. Create your own signature sound. And doing that in pop is very tricky but when you do it, there’s no feeling like it. I also love that people let go with pop. They get up and move and dance and sometimes act a little goofy. They have fun with it. I love that.”

Regarding the future of pop music, he said, “Well, I think pop like most genres is constantly developing and changing and blending and overlapping. You have pop that’s organic in a singer songwriter kind of way with hints of folk and even new country. Then you have pop that will feature rap in it. It’s exciting and unexpected and incredibly creative. Pop is also heavily influenced by world music. I’d love to create an international pop song that maybe features or samples or mashes up a classic Russian song that people outside of Russia wouldn’t know. That would be amazing.”

For his fans, he concluded, “First, how grateful I am for their support. It means everything to me. I’m constantly exploring new things and I like the idea of my fans taking that journey with me, together.”
