In a world where anyone with a computer can be a professional critic, “50 Shades of Grey” has become a global phenomenon and widely promoted through the Internet and Social sites. Over 100 million copies of the book by British author E.L. James has sold and a major motion picture expected to do as well.
When shown the toned-down version of the movie, India’s censorship board blocked it from being seen in their country. In has been accepted in most countries, but blocked in India including Malaysia. However, film censoring in India is typical. Barring movies and cutting scenes is what they do, especially movies that are considered too racy and may cause religious offense.
What has not been seen in the media and maybe why it is blocked in India and Malaysia is the fact the movie involves heavy scenes of BDSM, more explicit than: bondage and discipline, dominance and discipline, and sadism and masochism. Other areas the movie displays are the top or dominant positions, with this person in control of the activity; the bottom or submissive is the person being controlled; and the switch, a person can go either way.
According to the Telegraph,
“It did not pass, but it is not unusual as many mainstream films don’t get clearance in the first step, people have the option to go for a revising committee’s opinion,” Shravan Kumar told the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.
