Rising country artist Griffen Palmer chatted about his new single “Second Guessing,” winning “Songland,” performing on “The Bachelor,” and his latest endeavors.

Palmer: The pride of Pickering, Ontario

An native of Pickering, Ontario, Palmer grew up in a musical family, with his early influences including John Mayer, Kings of Leon, Elton John, The Eagles, and Bruce Hornsby. “Growing up in Canada was great. I love Canada, I still love going home a couple of times of year and for holidays, it will always feel like home for me,” he said.

‘Second Guessing’ single

On his latest single “Second Guessing,” Palmer said, “It has been great, and it has been really cool hearing everyone’s reaction to it. I actually had some friends that were getting married and I sent them a love song as a little gift, and that was what inspired me. It is neat to see all of these doors that keep opening.”

“I fell in love with the songwriting of country music, that’s what got me into it,” he said about his passion for the country genre. “I love the stories that the artists get to tell. There is such a diverse array of what you can say and talk about.”

“I think it’s a really sweet love song, and I think a lot of people can see themselves in the song. It has been fun seeing people connect to it and using it at their wedding song,” he added.

‘The Bachelor’ on ABC

Most recently, he performed “Second Guessing” on “The Bachelor” on ABC. “Performing on ‘The Bachelor’ was a very cool experience,” he said. “It is always interesting being on TV and it was fun being a part of such an iconic show.”

‘Songland’

He won NBC’s “Songland” back in May of 2020, and he subsequently earned cuts with global music stars Florida Georgia Line (“Second Guessing”) and Keith Urban (“Polaroid”) as well as The Band Camino, Chelsea Cutler, MacKenzie Porter, and Jade Eagleson, among others. “Winning ‘Songland’ was pretty cool too. Everything you see on that show on-camera and behind the scenes is pretty legit,” he said.

“It was fun going through that experience, and winning was the cherry on top, I didn’t expect that at all,” he added.

Palmer is proud to be a part of the Big Loud Records family. “It’s awesome, I have been a part of their publishing for the last few years and I love everybody that works there, and now it is even better to be a part of their record label as an artist. I have a whole new side of my career with them,” he said.

Spring tour with Lily Rose

This spring, he will be hitting the road with his labelmate Lily Rose (and warming up the stage for her) as part of her headlining tour. His debut studio album will be released later on in the year. “We are actually out on the road right now,” he said. “We are playing in Starkville, Mississippi, tonight. The fans are awesome and we are having a lot of fun.”

The digital age

On being an artist in the digital age, Palmer said, “I think it’s pretty cool because it makes music more accessible to people, there is so much more that people can experience as a result.”

Dream duet choices in music

Palmer listed Carrie Underwood as his dream female duet choices in music. “Carrie is just a badass, power-vocalist. I think her and I would be able to do something cool together,” he said.

Success

On his definition of the word success, Palmer said, “Success is what I am doing now. All I ever wanted to do was be a musician and write songs, and I am getting to live that out right now, so I feel very successful already.”
