The album reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200 all-genre album charts, and it garnered critical acclaim from music critics and fans. It has been praised for its emotional texture, potent subject matter and the purity of its vocal performance. In addition, Southern Blood reached No. 2 on the Americana/folk albums charts, No. 3 on the Rock Albums charts, as well as No. 5 on the “Top Current Albums charts.”
Allman was assisted on his final studio effort by his manager, Michael Lehman, and Grammy-winning producer Don Was. It features songs that were composed by such acclaimed musicians as Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Jerry Garcia, Willie Dixon, and Allman himself.
Aside from being a founder of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg had a respected career as a solo artist in his own right. He is the songwriter responsible for such classics as “Midnight Rider,” “It’s Not My Cross To Bear,” “Dreams,” and “Whipping Post,” among others. In 1995, Allman was inducted into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as part of the Allman Brothers), and in 2012, he received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Grammy awards.
