Grammy-nominated pop star GAYLE (2023 for “Song of the Year”) chatted about her new music and touring with Taylor Swift and Pink.

New single

On her new single “everybody hates me,” she said, “I came up with it in a very specific moment in my life where more people were looking at me than ever, which means more people had opinions and criticisms about it. I think I knew what that was going to feel like and it felt completely different, and my coping mechanism was to act like I didn’t care, and that was just not really the truth. I almost twisted negativity and turned it into positivity for me “

“Now, I go to therapy and I am more sentimental than I’ve ever been, and I’m in more of a healthy place,” she added. “I felt it was a good place where I wanted to start conceptually with a new project and just me getting older. It’s such an exciting point in my life.”

Commercial success of ‘abcdefu’

She opened up about the commercial success of “abcdefu.” “It’s so crazy everything that has happened with this song and how it has changed my life. It has been such a blessing,” she said.

“Getting a Grammy nomination for ‘Song of the Year’ for ‘abcdefu’ was the wildest thing in the whole world,” she said. “I was in Spain when it happened, so I found out about my Grammy nod at 6 p.m. To get nominated, as a songwriter, for that song, and for ‘Song of the Year’ and to be nominated alongside my best friend was just such a dream come true. It was the best thing ever. Being in the same room as Beyonce and Adele was such a dream.”

Songwriting inspirations

On her songwriting inspirations, GAYLE said, “Just my personal experiences and I really love the art of collaboration. It is really fun getting to grow sonically and see what different genres inspire me and try to put different inspirations and genres in a pop space. Also, getting to travel more and seeing the world is where I draw my inspirations from.”

Touring with Pink and Taylor Swift

GAYLE shared that she is looking forward to touring with such female pop megastars as Pink and Taylor Swift. “That is the most exciting thing ever,” she said. “I am so excited to go to Germany, Paris, Belgium, and the UK with Pink and to play stadiums.”

“It is so crazy being able to play stadiums with Taylor Swift,” GAYLE added. “The direct support for Taylor is so amazing. It is exciting to be on these shows that are breaking crazy records. I am so grateful for Taylor Swift having me.”

The digital age

On being an artist in the digital age, GAYLE said, “The digital age was something that definitely I didn’t expect. I started doing music around 10 when Spotify was just starting to get there and Instagram was really trying to pick up, Snapchat was starting to create and TikTok wasn’t a thing on my radar musically. I loved Vine and when it went down it broke my heart.”

“I really didn’t expect social media to be such a big part of making music. I learned that all of these platforms are important for different reasons and it is important to have different content on different platforms. Social media is such a big component these days, and parts of me love it because it allows me to get to connect to people all over the world,” she explained.

“Social media allows artists to have power in their narrative. It’s something I try my best to utilize in the best way in order to connect with people and to help my music,” she added.

Dream duet choices in music

GAYLE listed Gracie Abrams, Taylor Swift, and beabadoobee as her dream collaboration choices in the music business.

On the title of the current chapter of her life, GAYLE said, “New Beginnings.” “That’s what I am really work on… Growing,” she said. “I’ve been lucky to experience high highs and sometimes, low lows. Now, I am trying my best to put myself in the middle.”

Favorite motto to live by

On her favorite motto to live by, she said, “Don’t take criticism from somebody you wouldn’t take advice from.”

Success

On her definition of the word success, GAYLE said, “Success, for me, means freedom. I want stability and freedom in my life. My goal is to create a community of people and a positive community at that. My goal is the give myself freedom to do the things that I want in my life.”
