The dispute started back in 2014 when 3D Realms announced that Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction, a top-down action role-playing game, was in the works. This created a legal problem since the rights to Duke Nukem was passed to Gearbox Software following a downsizing and another legal dispute in 2009.
All parties involved were able to avoided going to court as they reached an undisclosed settlement with Gearbox keeping the rights to the Duke Nukem series. Interceptor CEO Frederik Schreiber has stated, “Right now, I, along with my Interceptor colleagues, are busy making the finishing touches on Bombshell. We can’t wait until you guys can play it!”
3D Realms have since turned the game into a new series titled Bombshell, which a new female protagonist named Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison. However for gamers, Gearbox has no plans to develop a new Duke Nukem game at the moment.
Duke Nukem is an iconic PC shooter that focus on the namesake hero trying to save earth from an alien invasion. The last installment, Duke Nukem: Forever, has become infamous for its decade long production only to be universally panned by gamers and critics for a verity of problems.
