Atlantic recording artist GAYLE chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadaots about her single “abcdefu,” being an artist in the digital age, and she revealed her two dream duet choices in music.
On her new song, she said, “I was writing with two of my favorite people to make music with and I just started riffing off the things I hate about my ex and then we put a melody to it.”
Regarding her music and songwriting inspirations, she said, “My life is honestly a big inspiration for my songwriting. Personally, I don’t always process my emotions right away and it can take me a couple of days to realize if I’m angry or happy about something and songwriting is a good tool for me to use to help process my emotions.”
On being an artist in the digital age, she said, “Social media gives an artist the opportunity to control their own narrative and how they want their story to be told but it also allows for the opportunity to be criticized which can be really scary. There’s up sides and downsides to being an artist in the digital age but I really love that I’m able to be in control of the story I’m trying to tell.”
For young and aspiring artists, she said, “Do what makes you happy and what you think is cool because if anyone else doesn’t like it at least you do.”
Regarding the title of the current chapter of her life, she said, “Evolving.”
GAYLE listed Harry Styles and Lewis Capaldi as her dream collaboration choices in music.
On her definition of the word success, she said, “Success for me is when I set a goal that I want to achieve and then I do the work to make it happen.”
GAYLE remarked about her single “abcdefu,” “I felt the need to constantly have positive feelings towards my ex in order to have a healthy breakup but trying so hard to be healthy is what actually made it really toxic towards myself. I didn’t allow myself to process any of my anger towards him or the breakup. I had to wait until my ex was talking shit until I could allow myself to be mad? That’s unfair to myself and I should have allowed the time and space for me to be mad so when I finally let myself be mad so let’s just say it came out in an extreme way.”
“I hope the takeaway from this song is its ok to be mad, sit and stew in it, feel every second of your anger and process it because letting it build up isn’t a good long term solution and I found that out the hard way,” she said with a sweet laugh.
