The nominations for the Golden Globes were announced today, and meaty thoughtful films made the shortlist. Frost/Nixon led with five nominations, including Best Motion Picture, and actors Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet were both nominated twice.
Digital Journal — Hollywood got its first glimpse at what films could win top honours, as the Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday. These nomination, chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are often a good indicator of Oscar honourees.
Taking home five nominations each were Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Frost/Nixon, reimagining the Watergate interviews between David Frost and Richard Nixon, was nominated for best drama film and best actor for Frank Langella. Ron Howard (Best Director) and Peter Morgan (Best Screenplay) also got Globe nominations, along with Hans Zimmer for Best Original Score.
A Forrest Gump-like tale, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button earned kudos for Best Drama; other films in Best Drama category included The Reader, Revolutionary Road and Slumdog Millionaire.
Brad Pitt got the nod for Best Actor for Button, and he’ll be vying for the prize against Leonardo Dicaprio (Revolutionary Road), Sean Penn (Milk), and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler).
Of interest to Batman fans is the sole nomination for The Dark Knight — the late Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor. The actor who played The Joker is also up against Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. from the comedy Tropic Thunder, Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt) and Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess).
Nominated for Best Picture in Comedy or Musical is a mix of well-known and indie hits of 2008: Burn After Reading, Happy-Go-Lucky, In Bruges, Mamma Mia! and Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Several heavy hitters also crowd the Best Original Song category: Peter Gabriel (Wall-E‘s “Down to Earth”), Bruce Springsteen (“The Wrestler”), Miley Cyrus (Bolt‘s “I Thought I Lost You”) and Beyonce Knowles (Cadillac Records‘ “Once in a Lifetime”).
