Rising singer-songwriter Francois Klark chatted about his new album “Adventure Book,” which comes out on Friday, July 29th.
How did “Fuego” come about? Nice song!
The idea for ‘Fuego’ came about as a result of a trip I went on to Antigua, Guatemala. The song is named after one of the two volcanoes just outside of Antigua and it recounts my experience hiking up the volcanoes and journeying through Guatemala.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
I firmly believe that you need to live in order to write – life needs to happen to you. I often write about what I’ve experienced or thought about, but I also love dreaming up fictional stories and writing songs about them – almost as if describing a movie that is playing in my head.
My muses are plenty: nature, music, and the close relationships in my life. However, for this particular album traveling and the music, art, and cultures that I encountered were my main inspirations.
How did you approach the song selection for the new album “Adventure Book”?
As I reminisced about the adventures and trips that I’ve been on. The experiences and stories from those trips birthed the concept for the album and became the perfect vehicle through which to explore themes of wanderlust, youth, relationships, and faith.
Which artists would you like to do a dream collaboration with and why?
UK artist Labrinth (Timothy Lee McKenzie) – I have been a big fan of his for many years. I am crazy about his production and writing. His writing and production are incredibly creative, ever surprising, and beautiful.
I would also jump at the chance to sing with Chris Martin. It doesn’t have to be a big to-do…just a little acoustic duet on an old upright piano would do. I love his songwriting – his lyrics, melodic choices, and chord changes. I also, more than anything, love to be around and work with good people, and Chris seems like a genuine mensch.
What does the word success mean to you?
Experiencing joy and fulfillment in my life, relationships, and work despite successes or failures.
What would you like to tell our readers about “Fuego”?
Our days on this beautiful planet are few – live them to the fullest. Incredible and life-changing moments are waiting just outside your door – boldly step into them no matter how grand or mundane. I had a blast making this song. I hope that ‘Fuego’ makes you smile and that it ignites a flame in your chest to boldly go into the world. May it bring you great joy.
