FNX (First Nations Experience) just launched a new pioneering phone app and streaming service for Native American content.
This marks the first national television broadcaster, which is dedicated solely to Native American programming. It is a free, On-Demand streaming app and platform that will help amplify the Indigenous voices, their stories and narratives, from around the globe.
Background on FNX
FNX, which debuted as a PBS-affiliated broadcast channel back in September of 2011, was established through a collaboration with KVCR television on the San Bernardino Valley College campus.
This launch was made possible by a start-up grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Similarly, the new FNX App has been developed with funding from a grant provided by San Manuel.
FNX features Native-produced and themed documentaries, dramatic series, nature, cooking, gardening, children’s and arts programming. Its mission is to strives to accurately illustrate the lives and cultures of Native people around the world.
Viewers are able to stream This is Indian Country with Ruth-Ann Thorn, War Club, as well as full episodes of The AUX, among others.
Lynn Valbuena on the new FNX app
Lynn Valbuena, the Chairwoman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, enthused about this new initiative. “Creating a streaming platform for FNX advances our vision for Native American and Indigenous media creations to share our experiences with the world,” Valbuena expressed.
Valbuena remarked, “We are proud to support an initiative that will bring opportunities for Native American creatives to make their mark on entertainment and education.”
“We look forward to the stories and quality content that will be shared through this new streaming app,” she added.
Particularly impressive about the FNX app is that it is free, and it is available for streaming on all smart devises. It has a national TV broadcast reach that extends to 84.5 million households, and it is easily available to over 85 percent of the American population.
In many ways, this major milestone in Native American representation is similar to the pioneering days of BET (Black Entertainment Television).
Native community members nationwide have affectionately described it as a “Native Netflix,” and rightfully so. As a result, the FNX app marks a pivotal moment in contemporary media history.
FNX red carpet GALA
In an effort to celebrate this milestone, FNX will be hosting a red carpet GALA on May 1st at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California. It will showcase both entertainment and Indigenous cuisine in a variety of ways.
It will feature a headlining performance by The Halluci-Nation (formerly A Tribe Called Red), a stand-up comedy performance from JR Redwater, a hop dance performance by two-time Cirque Du Soleil champion ShanDien Sonwai LaRance, as well as Electric Turquoise Dance Troupe.
From a lifestyle standpoint, it will also have gourmet offerings by award-winning Chef Sean Sherman (The Sioux Chef).
Along with honoring the debut of this new digital platform, the GALA will recognize the vibrant culture and contributions of the Native American communities.
Most importantly, FNX will help Native Americans step into a new era of media inclusivity with this latest venture of FNX. It is a celebration of their roots, heritage, storytelling and technological innovation.
