Jacklyn Zeman talks acting career, ‘Legends of General Hospital’ (Includes interview)

Zeman has played her character Bobbie Spencer on the hit ABC daytime drama General Hospital for well over 40 years. “It has been really fun for me. I enjoy it,” she admitted.

When asked how Zeman handled being dialogue-heavy all of these years (with 40 to 80 pages of script a night), she said, “Back in the days, it was crazy and a lot. Now, I don’t have as much on General Hospital, but I am involved in other projects. I am also working on The Bay, which we are shooting in Los Angeles. I go to the gym on the elliptical and I learn my lines there.”

On November 10 and 11, 2018, Zeman will be a part of the “Legends of General Hospital” events in New York at Long Beach and Melville, respectively. “I am so excited about them,” she said. “It’s a triple wonderful thing. I was born and raised in New Jersey and then lived in New York. When I go back to the New York and New Jersey area, I feel like I’m going home. The group of actors that are appearing at these events are like family to me. There are a lot of nostalgic memories with them. We have become very attached.”

“I hope the fans will come join us and come see us,” Zeman said. “We have a great group of actors and we are all excited about being there. A lot of people have been there before, but there will also be new people. We all get to talk and have conversations and new stories that are very spontaneous. It is a lot of fun.”

For more information on these New York events, check out the official Coastal Entertainment homepage. “Coastal Entertainment is wonderful. Everybody that works there is fabulous. They are extremely professional and they always make it work,” she said. “They have major organizational skills to pull it all together.”

She has been nominated for four Daytime Emmy awards, three of which were in the “Outstanding Supporting Actress” category (1981, 1995 and 1997), and once for “Outstanding Lead Actress” in 1998. “I was really happy about the nominations,” she said.

On reflecting over the last four decades, Zeman said, “I see a mother, sister, wife, business partner, actress, artist and a woman who loves her family and friends, and embraces life with much gratitude for all of the blessings that I have been given.”

Zeman added, “My daughters learned to read joining me on my lines. That’s literally how they learned how to read. I’ve always had a balance between family and General Hospital, and it always allowed me to be a hands-on full-time mom. I would have dinner with my family each night.”

On the impact of technology on the entertainment industry, she said, “It’s all good. We have to embrace change since the world doesn’t stand still anymore. Go with the times. As we step into a new chapter, new opportunities come. The most important thing in life is to have an open heart and an open mind. The key to a happy, successful and joyful life is perspective. Happiness is a choice, so choose wisely.”

Zeman defined the word success as “happiness and fulfillment.” “Also, peace, excitement, passion and joy,” she added.
