“I am very excited for the show with Gareth tonight. It’s the first one of the tour, so we are all super-pumped,” she said. “I always love coming back to New York. It’s one of my favorite cities in the world.”
On working with Gareth Emery, she said, “I’m a huge fan of Gareth’s productions. He is an awesome and talented guy, and a great person. It’s great to do shows together.”
Hewitt is drawn to electronic dance music due to its unity, and the fact that it brings a lot of people together. “There is a lot feeling in the music and there is a community based around it, so the people get together and they create memories to the music, and it becomes a soundtrack of what they are going through with their friends,” she said.
She collaborated with Mark Sixma on the track “Restless Hearts.” “Mark is a really great producer, and I was really excited to work with him,” she said. “I was really excited to work with him since he is pushing the boundaries of the genre, and he did that with that track. I was stoked to be a part of it.”
Hewitt noted that she has been a huge fan of electronic music king Armin van Burren even prior to working with him, and she praised his label, Armada Music, for their support.
Prior to doing electronic dance music, Hewitt got her start singing in rock bands at age of 16, and then she did acoustic music and folk, as well as pop writing for other artists. “It has been a long and winding path that has gone in many different directions,” she admitted. “I was always playing music as a child. I used to play classical piano and I used to teach classical piano.”
When asked what she looks for in an audience, she said, “Every audience has been different, but awesome. People are always here to have a good time. It’s so different than rock music. In dance music, they are there to have a good time and they are up for it and excited. It’s an awesome energy exchange, and it gives me a lot of energy to feed off when I am performing.”
She revealed that the hardest part of her job is being sleep deprived at times, but she still loves what she does.
Hewitt defined success as “Being able to do something that you are really passionate about, and keeping that passion, and just enjoying what you do.”
