Actress Elizabeth ‘Bitsie’ Tulloch chatted about starring in “Superman & Lois” on The CW.
‘Superman & Lois’
The third season of the series premiered on The CW on March 14, 2023. The synopsis is: Clark Kent, “The Man of Steel” (played by Tyler Hoechlin) and Metropolis’ famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever — parenthood.
“I am really excited about this season,” she exclaimed. “We have the second episode airing tomorrow and it’s a huge one. It’s very revelatory as far as what one of the main arcs for Lois and everyone in Season 3 is.”
“Once the fans watch the episode tomorrow night, they will see how challenging my storyline is this season. I really hope people watch and they feel like it’s something that is very relatable. It is heavy, and I was really impressed with the writers to tackle a subject matter like this, and I hope viewers get a lot out of it,” she added.
Working with Tyler Hoechlin
Tulloch had positive words about working with Tyler Hoechlin. “Tyler is wonderful,” she said. “We have so much fun together, it’s almost problematic because we get the giggles. I can’t believe how lucky we got. We had not auditioned together, shockingly.”
“We have good chemistry, and our show hinges on that. In our show, they are married and in a stable marriage. From the first day, we got along so well. It is actually remarkable when I think about the fact that we never auditioned together,” she added.
Portraying Lois
Tulloch is drawn to playing Lois for many reasons. “Lois and Superman were both introduced at the same time 85 years ago, and I think she was introduced at a moment in history where women were more typically portrayed as meek, and not necessarily having big, active and illustrious careers, and she did. Lois was inspiring for a lot of people back then and even still now.”
“The reason Lois has maintained this allure and this interest in her is a testament to how incredibly strong and driven she is. Lois is uncompromising, and she was this person from the very beginning. That’s why people are so into her and that’s why I like playing her. I love playing her as a mom, that’s the first time it has been done in a live-action setting,” she elaborated.
“To be able to portray such a powerful journalist, who is torn half the time because of her career, is something that a lot of parents can relate to,” she added.
When asked if she ever imagined ever playing this iconic character, she responded, “No, I didn’t even start acting until my mid-20s, so I was not dreaming of acting or playing anyone at that point. Honestly, when I got the role, there was something about the whole process that made sense to me, and I have a lot in common with who Lois Lane is.”
Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy and Horror Films recognition
For her acting work as Lois Lane, Tulloch was nominated for “Best Actress in a Network/Cable Television Series” at the Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy and Horror Films. “That felt great,” she said. “It was cool for Tyler and me to be nominated along with some other cast members. We actually won for ‘Best Science Fiction Television Series — Network/Cable.’ We were really proud of what we were able to do.”
“Everybody who works on this show really loves it, the writing, and the IP. That was cool and exciting,” she admitted.
The digital age
On being an actress in the digital age, Tulloch said, “It feels like you need to roll with the punches. When I was on Grimm, streaming wasn’t really a thing. By the time I got off Grimm, everybody was streaming, and things were going on Netflix, and the landscape has really changed. There is some pressure to have more of a presence on social media.”
“I think it’s exciting. I try to see everything I can in the movies but if I can’t, I am watching movies on the streaming services. It is great that there is more access for people to watch art and movies,” she added.
Tulloch’s advice for young actors
For young and aspiring actors, Tulloch said, “Work. I studied first, and I wanted to make sure that when I walked into the rooms, I knew what I was doing because I didn’t have a resume.”
“I wanted to be able to take direction. The most important thing is to get into an acting class whether it’s for TV, film or theater. It’s a craft, and it’s incredibly competitive and I do think that having studied definitely gives you a leg-up as an actor,” she added.
Dream acting choices
She listed Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Brendan Gleeson, Domhnall Gleeson, Mark Rylance, as her dream acting choices in the entertainment industry.
On the title of the current chapter of her life, Tulloch said, “Spinning Plates.” “As a working mom, there is a lot going on all at once, all the time, so it requires some juggling. It’s a wonderful challenge and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am just crazy about my kid and I am crazy about my job,” she said.
Success
On her definition of the word success, she said, “Success is a feeling of fulfillment whatever that looks like. To me, it’s wanting what I have, not wanting things I don’t have. Being content and grateful with love and what is front of me.”
For the show’s fans, she concluded, “I am so grateful and thanks for coming on this journey with me. I love their ardent loyalty.”
