“Dropping the Soap,” starring Paul Witten and Jane Lynch, is a hilarious comedy series on Amazon Prime Video. Digital Journal has the scoop.
It is great to watch while quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic. Paul Witten served as co-creator (along with Mandy Fabian and Kate Mines), co-writer, and co-executive producer. He also stars in the leading role of Julian Draker, where he is delightful.
The series, directed by Ellie Kanner, deals with “Collided Lives,” a drama within a drama. In this long-running drama (with low ratings), a new executive producer Olivia Vanderstein (Jane Lynch) takes over, spices things up, and makes many changes that she feels are necessary for the show to survive, thrive, and enhance its ratings.
Kate Mines delivers as the vindictive Kit Knockers, while Suzanna Friedline is impressive as the complex Shea Buttersfield. Under Vanderstein’s leadership, Donovan Knockers (Michael McKiddy) is able to change the “Collides Lives” script(s) substantially and they come with distinct, eccentric storylines for the characters.
Burt Grinstead is also witty and charming as Sean the heartthrob onscreen son of Julian, where the viewer can slightly recall Philip Bruenn in the hit digital series “Studio City.”
Equally noteworthy is Ammar Ramzi Mahmood as Raheem. Nadia Bjorlin and Rene Ashton make neat cameos as Elena Dupree and Ashley respectively.
For her portrayal of Olivia Vanderstein, Lynch won a Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series,” and rightfully so. Jane Lynch is feisty, badass, vibrant, and a great deal of fun to watch.
“Dropping the Soap” is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
The Verdict
Overall, “Dropping the Soap” is a clever and entertaining comedy series to binge-watch. Paul Witten, Jane Lynch, and the entire cast are sensational. It is worth more than just a passing glance, and it garners two thumbs up.
