This is Briney’s third radio single from his Top 10 Roots Music Report album, Super Country Cowboy. He pays tribute to fatherhood. A traditional country ballad, “Pretty Big Deal” has a classic Alan Jackson meets Travis Tritt throwback vibe and that ought to be taken as a major compliment. In a few instances, the listener can easily recall Luke Bryan’s “Rain Is a Good Thing,” which is yet another well-crafted tune. He is accompanied with neat harmony vocals and that helps elevate the tune to a higher level. The song is making its way up the New Music Weekly country charts, and rightfully so.
From a lyrical standpoint, it may be perceived as the male rebuttal to Miranda Lambert’s “Famous In a Small Town.” Briney’s baritone vocals are rich and impressive.
Briney gets better with each and every song he records. He proves that he is very multi-faceted in the genre. His previous single “Unknown Soldier” was moving, powerful and the quintessential Memorial Day ode.
The Verdict
Overall, Doug Briney delights on “Pretty Big Deal.” Country radio deserves to give him and his music more than just a passing glance. He is all about the music. His new single garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
