Sequels rarely compare to the original, but that doesn’t mean they’re not still enjoyable. Despicable Me introduced audiences to Gru (Steve Carell) and the Minions seven years ago, and they’ve experienced a lot of changes since then. After adopting three girls, Gru switched sides and started playing for the good guys — a transition that was more difficult on his yellow helpers than their boss. However, fighting the good fight is often a thankless job… and being bad is so much more fun. Thus, in Despicable Me 3, Gru has a choice to make.
Where the first trailer focused on presenting the movie’s ‘80s-obsessed villain, the second official trailer introduces yet another new character to the franchise. It picks up almost immediately after the first as Gru is being chastised for bungling his clash with Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker). With ample spare time on his hands, the invitation to visit his mysterious twin brother is irresistible. Dru (also Carell doing a slightly different voice) turns out to be exactly like Gru… but charming, rich and blessed with a full head of blonde hair. He’s also keeping the family business alive, continuing their long line of villainy — and he wants Gru to join him. The Minions are obviously excited by the prospect of getting back to their evil work, but Gru may have trouble keeping up with his more suave sibling.
Since the Minions are generally a highlight of these films, it’s nice to see they’ll still be making regular appearances throughout the movie and providing their own brand of commentary. The potentially competing narratives is a bit of a concern since trying to do too much in what will presumably be 90 minutes can be a mistake. But fortunately filmmakers are remaining true to the characters and there’s no doubt this sequel will still be entertaining even if it’s flawed. Plus, what’s with all the pigs?
