‘Despacito’ songwriter Erika Ender talks songwriting, advice (Includes interview)

On being a special guest at the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Ender said, “I am super happy. I just got inducted in the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame last year, as the youngest ever, so that was such a blessing. Being here tonight is a dream come true. There are a lot of people on the Anglo side that I admire very much, and ‘Despacito’ opened this door.”

Ender is the co-writer of the international smash pop hit “Despacito,” along with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

Regarding the commercial success of “Despacito,” she said, “It’s amazing. Right? From the very first day, it showed that it was going to be something huge, and it became the snowball that never stopped growing.”

For aspiring songwriters, Ender said, “Follow your hearts. Continue growing all the time. Remember that we are writing somebody else’s soundtrack. We need to have the responsibility of writing songs that will stay around forever.”

Her career in the music business has spanned over 25 years. She is the first and only Latina artist to have earned a Grammy nomination for “Song of the Year,” which she achieved this year for “Despacito.” In addition, Ender was the youngest person ever inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.
