David Bowie’s wife of 24 years breaks month-long silence

Bowie died on January 10 after an 18-month long battle with cancer. He was 69.

After her initial post, Iman followed it up with “Pray hardest when it is hardest to pray.” Iman was active on Instagram during Bowie’s last days, posting emotional quotes. “Do not worry that you’re life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come,” and “Live life as though everything is rigged in your favor.” Both are quotes of Rumi, the thirteenth-century Sufi mystic, and both were prophetically posted just a short while before Bowie’s death.

Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid is the daughter of a Somalian diplomat, and has a 15-year-old daughter, Alexandra, with Bowie. They married in 1992, after having met at a party arranged by Bowie’s hairstylist, Teddy Antolin. Antolin said that Bowie, who was at the height of his fame at the time, was lonely at the time. But upon meeting Iman, he turned his life around and quite drugs and alcohol, though he couldn’t shake off his cigarette habit.

“I fell in love with David Jones,” she told The Independent in 2014. “I did not fall in love with David Bowie. Bowie is just a persona.” Bowie’s will was filed in the Manhattan Surrogate Court on Friday, February 5. The approximately $100 million estate will be split between Iman, who gets 50 percent, and Bowie’s children.
