Pop singer-songwriter David Archuleta (“American Idol” fame) chatted about his new memoir “Devout,” his book tour, and new EP.

Inspiration to write this book

Regarding his inspiration to write the memoir “Devout,” Archuleta stated, “I think simply by opening up about my own experiences and my own journey and seeing how many people related to it. The fans wanted to know how I came to make the changes in my life to be where I am today.”

“So, I decided to go ahead and share those things. I was hoping it would help other people, and make them feel seen in their own journeys,” he added.

“I’m ready to do some more book stops to talk to more people about the book. I’ve enjoyed the conversations that the book has sparked, especially in a group setting,” he noted.

“The book tour has been really fun to do,” he added.

Lessons learned from this book

On the lessons learned from this book, Archuleta reflected, “I think it taught me what childhood wounds still affect me… and perhaps even the trauma that I still have that alters and affects the way that I go about my day.”

“The book helped me see the things that I can work on or reflect on, or just be aware of, and the things that I can heal from,” he acknowledged.

“Overall, the book helped me just look at myself in a much deeper way,” he added.

On his new three-track EP, Archuleta, shared, “I am very excited about the new EP. There are three songs on the EP, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to share these songs with people too.”

“The EP feels like an additional part of the book, in a way,” he added.

When asked how he approached these three songs, Archuleta stated, “I approached them with a lot of tender emotions.”

“The EP was a way to process a lot of feelings. I was feeling a lot of different emotions and I was able to process them — and get them out — by writing those songs,” he noted.

Stage of his life

On the title of the current chapter of his life, Archuleta revealed, “Recovery.” “I would call this my ‘Recovery’ chapter,” he admitted.

Human Rights Campaign

Archuleta exclaimed about the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), and all of the nonprofit work they do for the LGBTQIA+ community. “I love working with the Human Rights Campaign. I’ve done several of their live events, and they are really fun.”

“I’ve sung George Michael’s ‘Freedom! ’90’ at their events, and that was really cool to get to do,” Archuleta added.

Archuleta was honored by the Human Rights Campaign in 2025 with their “Visibility Award.”

Prior to that, Archuleta won the 2024 GLAAD Media Award for “Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist.”

Future plans

On his future plans, Archuleta said, “I’m working on new Christmas music right now, so there will be more of that. Alos, some pop projects that I am excited about. I am experimenting a little bit more with my Latin side, and I am trying to implement that more into my music.”

Speaking of holiday music, Archuleta headlined Joe’s Pub in New York City with his “My Only Wish” show this past December.

“Joe’s Pub was so much fun,” he admitted. “It’s a great venue and it has some cool history there, and it was just a nice audience to get to sing Christmas songs for.”

Superpower of choice

His superpower of choice would be to “stop time.” “I would love to pause and bend time,” he noted.

Success

On his definition of the word success, Archuleta said, “Success means showing growth, and being able to reach out and connect to people.”

“Also, showing growth in my business where I can pay everybody that I hire, being able to pay my bills and also be able to give myself experiences, and take care of my needs,” he acknowledged.

“Most importantly, I think the biggest thing for me is connecting with others and making an impact in a way that just connects. So, success is just connecting with people,” he added.

Message for his fans

Archuleta enthused, “Thank you for following and for being interested in what I do and for showing up to my shows and book stops, as well as for supporting and buying the book and the music.”

“Thanks for subscribing to my channels… all that helps to keep me moving forward, and it gives me more chances to create and connect with everyone. That is all thanks to the fans,” he added.

Closing thoughts on the new EP and book

For his fans and supporters, Archuleta expressed, “I want them to feel vulnerability. I want them to be able to feel raw emotions.”

“Hopefully, it can help them to open up about something in them that they may have had locked in for a while, and that it can help them break free,” Archuleta concluded.
